Default The Summer Bikers are out....

Was outside in the nice weather yesterday evening and apart from the normal summer sounds all I could hear were Motorbikes, normally I have no problem with motorcyclists and their noise but last night they were getting right on my crack, basically I could hear them racing, big bikes by the sound of it, could hear as they went through the gears and it sounded that they were flat out in pretty much top gear.

Normally I dont pay it any attention, but last night I was waiting for an abrupt stop and the sound of sirens, it was really that loud and agressive, now I dont hang about when its safe to do so but realitically I bottle it at a ton but could do about 120, but any half decent sports bike is way way faster than most cars (even mine ) so I got to wondering how fast they were going, so to anyone that rides a sportsbike what speed would you expect to see going through the gears between a couple of roundabouts about a mile/mile and a half apart ?

Do these lads get home and wonder why they did it, get worried about an NIP, is it actually that dangerous or do most bikers get killed around town at low/sensible speed.

And do they realise the f*cking racket they make !

On my old GSXR600 an indicated 140mph was no problem and 150+ was achievable with a bit of nerve on some stretches near me. My TL1000R could do 75-ish in first, flat in 3rd was about 130-ish IIRC.

Yes, you often do get home and think "oops, that was dodgy" and the racket is part of the fun.

Sounded like, as for getting old, probably and normally it doesnt bother me, in fact I quite like it but last night it was all the time.

I reckon, they must be nudging 140, possibly 150.

I simply love the summer bikers accelerating hard outside the house ....through the 30 beacuse they simply cant wait to get round the next bend and out of the village into the national limit roads. Why at 6am on a Sunday moring should they spare a second thought that thier race pipes might wake small children sleeping wth open windows. So long as they're having their little bit of fun.

To$$ers all.

Never topped 35mph on my bike. But it's very very quiet. Except when I fall off and swear a lot. Shame the engine is an ageing balding shortar5e with a penchant for annoying SNers...

Are you absolutely sure its bikes? Have you seen them doing it? I suspect not as you only said you could "hear" them.
I have a motorway near where I live, and what I thought were bikes actually turned out to be teenagers in their Saxo's, Clio's etc. with massive exhausts. They were going absolutely flat out through the gears (all noise and no action). They are much more noisy than a bike with a race exhaust.

LoL - I'm in the middle of rural suffolk.

I can differentiate the sound of a bike on full chat to the kids in their saxos as it goes past the house 20yards away. You can follow the sequence of bends most of the time for up to 3 or 4 miles away with ease. And the bikes are the loudest.

*All* the bikers that go past clearly on full chat through a 30mph village are to$$ers. Those that dont aren't.

Scunnered, to be fair I hear cars as well but generally I can fairly accurately tell the difference between a bike engine and a car engine, most bike engines rev to 12/13,000 sometimes higher rpm and sounds very different to a 18 year old spotty herbert torturing a Clio 1.2 "Versailles" with a Peco Back box, get the occasional Exotic sounding motor as well, usually Ferraris are quite easy to tell by engine note as are Vtec Honda's, also with the bikes, they sound fast, i.e. the sound seems to change direction quicker than a ratty Saxo VTR, also the bikes down have Dizzee Rascal or similar being pumped out of mahoosive speakers .

Not havign a major downer on bikers as, on balance bikers are generally more aware and better road users than a lot of car operators, they do it through choice rather than neccisity and are enthusiastic about it but I think some do get a bit carried away with the available performance, I do like the noise, but kind of in the way a waft of cigar smoke smells quite nice but you dont want to spend an evening in a room full of it.

Matteeboy, liked the annoying balding engine line, made me lol, you have developed the ability to laugh at yourself almost as much as we do

I don't have too many bad things to say about bikers, but I was overtaken by a bike that must have been doing 130+ the other day on a single carriageway. At that speed even if you saw the biker in your mirror you'd be hard pressed to judge the speed he was approaching at.

It was only in the news down here the other day about a biker who had his arms, legs and head ripped off after crashing at stupid speeds.

Had a few of those round our way last night - the half hour or so between gearchanges gives it away

Assumming a rolling start off the roundabout an R1 would be close to Vmax and have time to brake over 1.5 miles.

It can do a standing 1/4 mile under 10 seconds @150 MPH

My opinion via a calculator and not through experience, although I rode my mates 125cc trails bike round the works carpark once..

Quite right J4CKO, it is time to get the 'bikes out and to enjoy them.

Yes I understand its a bit off putting when you hear them being well wound up near your house. We get our fair share of that here and sometimes I wish they would go a bit slower so that I can see them!

We have a lot of fun on our vintage 'bikes on our club runs round Devon and especially Dartmoor. The villagers even bring their tea or G&T's out so they can watch and wave to us. Its all a bit of fun and those old bangers can go a lot faster then you might expect.

I still remember my Kwacker ZX12R though. The acceleration through 150 was amazing!

Jay, think you are about right,

So, assuming it's an R1, and say it's carrying perhaps 40 mph off the roundabout it does look possible that including braking it could acheive pretty near its top speed and brake again inside 1.5 miles.

R1's are pretty quick even by bike standards but not sure how the fit in the pecking order these days, still the fastest or are there newer, even dafter models ?

Spoke to a biker mate, I am reliably informed that the Kawasaki ZX14 is pretty brisk as well, especially when you add the turbo kit, I just had a look on the net and there are 500 bhp Hayabusa's ?????

How the hell do you ride that, surely it would spin the rear tyre, rip your arms out of their sockets or both, is that just ***** waving or is there actually a hardcore out there that think a stock R1 or similar is slow ?

If we're talking the A34 bypass, you could easily hit about 130/140mph between roundabouts..... Not quite sure you'd hit full speed..

Been there done that sold the bike.....

Yes, the A34 bypass, my dad claimed 130 on a Fireblade but got told off by any of us he told so tends to keep quiet now, I can easily get 110 in the car on the last section, thats with backing off so if actually going for it I reckon 120 would be possible so I reckon a commited loony on a bike could go much much faster and it sounds like they do, regularly. Obviously I am talking in KMH here......

I dont tend to bother nowadays, cant be bothered with the agro, plus there is no challenge with makign something powerfull go fast, I get more satisfaction (and less points) by dragging my fat **** onto a pushbike, best I have managed recently was 37.4, in the past I had a reading of 49 mph but I don't know how accurate that was, at least a good 40 mph though.

LOL at the thread moaning about noisy bikers turning into a "how fast is your bike" fight!]

A bike ridden badly is a bike ridden badly be it a scooter or an R1.

it is interesting to try and put some perspective on how fast these things actually go.

Tyre noise is actually louder in real terms than most motorbikes, but you get so used to hearing it you tune it out. Its the distinctive note of bikes that makes them stand out as a nuisance on these fine, quiet evenings.

Not condoning them, but when you're out on the bike its hard not to "enjoy" the performance and sound they make. Everyone has their selfish moments

Rarel hear tyre noise but the bwaarp, bawaaaaaaarp, bwaaaaaaaaaaarp, ba ding ding, bwarp of a sports bike is way louder and more dostinctive, still they pale into insignificance campared to the noisy tosser of a Milkman who delivers anywhere between midnight and 6am in a diesel transit, sometimes with a slipping fanbelt.

Some bikes are all noise an no go; I had an old Kawasaki Z500 for a short while, had some loud cans on when I bought it to tat about with.

Thing sounded perfect, making all the right high pitch wails of a small 4pot screaming past the 9,500rpm redline.

But whilst it made an impressive noise, it was all noise and not much go (for a bike) 110mph flat out. Was pretty nippy up to 60-70mph, but you had to work it though all the gears. The fact it was dog rough and the engine was nearing its best before date didn't help matters either.

An early Blade will get to 130 140 pretty quick then starts to gasp a bit
Later gsxr1000 and R1s good for 150 160
Busa ,Blackbird,ZX12 will see 180 but they arent sportsbikes .ZZR 14 i would guess is the same but havent ridden one.
Those are real world speeds not from magazines if that helps. Most big bikes should be able to get to 120 140 within that mile between the roundabouts
