Is bank transfer safe for a seller
Im selling something online but the buyer does not have a paypal account and wants to pay via bank transfer.
How safe would it be for me to give a stranger my acct no. and sortcode?

Everytime you write a cheque you hand the same info over.
Everytime you buy something from an online trader you hand the same info over.

Yes and no. Seem to remember one J Clarkson publishing this info in one of his newspaper columns. Someone signed him up for a monthly charity donation via direct debit to the tune of several hundred a month.
In fact here is the story BBC NEWS | Entertainment | Clarkson stung after bank prank
Seems like you need the address too?

Every time you had out that info via a website or by paying for something over the phone, you give that information and more (3 digit security number) yet you do it as it is a convenient way to pay for something.
That person on the other end of the phone could potentially take those details and use them for fraudulent intentions.
There is always a risk in handing bank details over. The majority of people are genuine. There are a minority who are not though.

we do it all the time over here it is the easiest and best way to pay for stuff, can't understand why you in britain are so paranoid, at least with online bank transfers you don't give out any security codes or numbers etc and everything is confirmed with a TAN number. I do 99% of my online shopping with bank transfers and never had a problem.

My main concern is not with the security issue, but the fact the person can have the transaction reveresed.
I would consider this more of a problem than security and the resulting hassle it would bring.
