University Fee's
My youngest is hoping to go to University next year, depending on her results,
I'm wondering when do you have to pay the fee's? Do you pay at the start of the academic year or the end of the year? Any help much appreciated.
Thanks

I'm pretty sure tuition fees are paid at the beginning of the year, if she's getting a student loan, you/she will never see the money it just goes straight from the loan provider to the university.

hi
you pay in full at the begining of the year or you can pay in 3 direct debit installments which is what i do, usually get the info the first week of uni, so dont worry if u havnt got it already
unless you get a tuition fee loan, in this case, you do nuthing after your application is accepted..

This is where Scotland has the right idea. I'm doing a masters and don't have to pay a penny back of the tuition fees for the whole 5 years I'm there.
We have the Students Awards Agency Scotland who deal with grants/loans etc. Do England not have an equivalent or is it at the uni's discretion?

its similar in england when doing a degree.. i.e. we can get loans and dont need to pay them back until we earn over 15,000 a year... you also can get govt grants etc. so doing a degree isnt that expensive.. i currently have no student debts at all. havnt touched a loan.
anyway masters... lpc and any futher education after that has to be paid by yourself with no student loan funding.. mates doing lpc.. hes working full time to pay for it..

eClaire, we do have a system where you can get a loan and don't have to pay them back until you earn over £15,000, like eggy790 say's. Unfortunately it depends on your household income and as our's is over £27,500 we have no chance of a "loan"
Thanks again for the excellent info.

no worries any questions .. just ask.. but non income assessed should be your best way.. even if you dont need the money.. its the chepest form of loan your ever going to get.. invest it, save it.. do something that;ll get you something back if you dont need.
check the student forum on money saving experts site.. very handy

Student loans are a nightmare to work out BUT tuition fee loans are not income assessed and at £27,500 I think that you might be pleasantly surprised, at that level you will be looking at getting a fairly significant grant as well as a maintenance loan. In fact about 70% of the maximum student loan is not income based at all. The problem comes with the hoops you have to go through to prove your income, that is a severe pain in the butt!
Shame the Scottish system doesn't apply to English students even if they are studying in Scotland (as my youngest will be soon) but the tuition fees in Scotland (for English students) are about a third of what they are in England so it's not all bad!

Very handy indeed Cheers for that!
The degree I'm doing is a 5 year MChem rather than a 4 years BSc. All paid for!!
Hope you manage to get it sorted, sounds like it's going to end up costing you an arm and a leg

DO look into non-income assessed loans, SOONER rather than later: you need to contact your LEA, as they deal with them. Do it tomorrow, by phone first, they will send out forms.
DO pay in 3 instalments, just in case: she may hate the course, become ill, hate the place etc. If it's paid in full, getting part back is a pain.

the student lea has been taken over by student finance england.. the forms are online.. download them if you know which ones they are..print..fill in and hand in at your local office..
edit: just remmebered. this is probs best when your in your conitnuing years i.e. 2nd onwords.. as you know the system and they already have most of your details..
either way should find plenty on the site info and faq wise..

For 2009 students - for those starting before then it's an unholy alliance of the LEA and Student Finance England
Student Finance England wanted proof of income that I had already supplied to my LEA the year before as clearly the LEA could not be trusted to deal with it correctly - didn't help that I'd mislaid it all either
