Goverment say they should log Internet and phone calls
BBC NEWS | UK | UK 'must log' phone and web use
I find this slightly distrubing really, it is implied by the action of logging such actions that you are guilty at all times, but we dont have any evidence just yet.
Or perhaps they mean, we should legally do it - as we already have been for some time!
Anyone else think this is a step to far?

Your ISPs already store the information the Government are wanting here, its just they want direct unrestricted access without needing a court order, which to be granted one needs reasonable cause. Its the same with your mobile everything is stored but what they are after is a "central" where they can search, cross search everything etc
Is it a bad thing? probably not tbh, not unless you are doing things you shouldn't be. Personally, I would prefer them not to have full access to everything though.

what information do they actually store now? i thought mobile operators just hold who you rang / txt and the length of the call?
do they actually record the convo/text messages? if so where do they store it all? must take up a lot of server space
same with ISPs?
but yeh as you said , they probs already do it, just wnat it central

As far as I am aware mobile operators just store what you mentioned (not voice, txt msg though), the Police use this type of data all the time, its actually how Sean Mercer was arrested, charged and subsequently convicted of the murder of Rhys Jones.
ISPs do log the headers of your email, but can not if you use a 3rd party, like Gmail, Hotmail etc

GCHQ: Mastering the Media ? The Register
Jacqui's secret plan to 'Master the Internet' ? The Register
"... Spy chiefs are already spending hundreds of millions of pounds on a mass internet surveillance system, despite Jacqui Smith's announcement earlier this week that proposals for a central warehouse of communications data had been dumped on privacy grounds.
The system - uncovered today by The Register and The Sunday Times - is being installed under a GCHQ project called Mastering the Internet (MTI). It will include thousands of deep packet inspection probes inside communications providers' networks, as well as massive computing power at the intelligence agency's Cheltenham base, "the concrete doughnut".
Sources with knowledge of the project said contracts have already been awarded to private sector partners ..."
"... According to sources, MTI is a core piece of the government's Interception Modernisation Programme (IMP). On Monday of last week, the Home Secretary Jacqui Smith announced that under IMP, rather than build a central warehouse, responsibility for storing details of who contacts whom, when and where will be imposed on communications providers.
The news was welcomed by privacy advocates and civil liberties campaigners, but sources described it as a "side show" compared to the massively increased surveillance capability that MTI will deliver. It will grant intelligence staff in Cheltenham complete visibility of UK Internet traffic, allowing them to remotely configure their deep packet inspection probes to intercept data - both communications data and the communication content - on demand ..."
