Did YOU vote?
I spent yesterday in a cold, draughty sports hall, as a poll clerk. I was there for 16 hours, of which the polls were open for 15..........all for a turnout of around 10%, not inc postal votes.
Most who DID come in complained that they had received little, or no info from the parties, seen virtually nothing on TV, or in the papers etc.
Yet the media, and the politicians, will call this "voter apathy".
Did YOU go? If not, why not?

I dd, it was dead and I agree, little was known from most candidates. But most seemed niche, christian alliance, bnp, and other such groups you would have to be a member of to know about.
Compulsory voting should be brought in lol.

I did and again it was pretty hush. The local election ballot had 3 choices and the European one was MASSIVE.....
There was an argument going on in the church hall when we arrived as a wimmin was stating how "disgusted" she was that no one had been around ot her house and told her how to vote, and that this was her first and last time.
But my beautiful Mrs and I did make the effort and go and vote.

Yep, popped down to the village school hall and put my finger print next to the EC UKIP candidate. No UKIP candidate for the County Council which was disappointing.
Hall was very quiet except for a lot of older ladies sitting behind a row of trestles.

We had flyers from the 3 main parties as well as UKIP - all in the recycle bin.
We didn't go down to our polling station to vote as we had already voted by post. As Al Capone is alledged to have said: vote early and vote often

Yep. Voted. It was quiet when I went to but then it was a small Cornish village ..... Cross went against an Independent for the locals. Partly as he was the only one who came to the door but mainly because I agreed with his policies.
UKIP for the Euros.

I wanted to vote but didn't. Too lazy I guess. I had to go straight to my g/fs as we went out for dinner and then to see the Terminator. Didn't get back in time to vote.

I voted yesterday and have always voted at every election since I turned 18. Many many people lost their lives for us to have democracy today and I always take the opportunity to vote.

I used postal voting as did the Mrs, didn't get any flyers from anyone except Labour and theres no way I would vote for them, I wonder if people are too scared to go door knocking as they are worried about the backlash over expenses etc?

Like Tanyatriangles I was woking as a Poll Clerk and only 152 people turned up all day. A suprising amount of people camme in just to spoil their vote in protest

I voted for the first time in a very long time to express my disgust at the current inadequate leadership. Local politicians are suffering a bloodbath due to national politics.
However they only have themselves to blame as over the past month we had one solitary leaflet from the Tories.

I think the whole system needs to be organised better. You get your cards in the post weeks before the date and you end up misplacing them or throwing them out. You dont get a clear overview of what the election is about and who is standing or what they are wanting to achieve.
I think if they made it easier for people then more people would vote, why not have an option to be able to vote online?
I do believe if they dont start targeting the younger generation to encourage them to vote then the number of people voting will significantly decrease as people who vote all the time will get older and die.

You don't need to have your polling card with you, just some form of ID. I lost mine a few GE's ago and still voted

I did vote. I think there is never an acceptable excuse for not doing so providing you can physically get to the poll. The vote is the only bit of power we really have and the politicians fear it. It was hard fought for in the past. Deliberately not voting is an indication of sheer apathy and is one reason why this country has descended to its present parlous state.
Even if you don't think much of any of the candidates or their parties, you will achieve nothing by abstaining, the politicians will take no notice of that. I think we have to at least consider which appears to be the least troublesome bunch of a bad lot and go for that. If you do nothing, then you have no right to complain

Yep I voted too - I have always done so since I could. Absolutely with Leslie on this. We take it for granted that we can vote (or not), many people would still die for that opportunity and its not being melodramatic to remember that just one generation ago we were fighting a world war for our freedom and part of that freedom is voting - for better or worse, it's up to us.
