Noka N97 vs i phone vs netbook
I currently have a n95 which i have had for 2 years and it has been great. I work a lot on the road and i really want a new phone which can cope with running the internet ok and all the other normal features.
I also want the phone to last 18 months and still be ok at the end of it and not really old fashion.
I really like the look and sound of the n97 which is coming out hopefully the end of this month. Then you have the i phone which has proved it can do everything i want it to do apart from i would like a querty keyboard.
i was also thinking about keeping my n95 and getting a samsung netbook but this works out quite expensive as they are about £300
Just after your views what do you think ?

Sounds like your thinking is all over the place lol.
What do you actually wanna do with the said phone?
Netbook suggests you want decent screen and Windows performance/interface
There are lots of devices out now that meet the mobile net needs, just depends exactly what you want.

Buy the iPhone, probably best to wait a few more days as it's quite likely an updated model is going to be released.
Don't worry about the keyboard, the fact that it's not hardware is a benefit on a small device, how many hardware keyboards can predict your next keypress then make the key bigger!
Owners of the first iPhone two years ago still have a cutting edge device with functionality others are still attempting to assimilate.

your right i did want a netbook just really for the web then i saw these new phones could do the basic email and sufing the internet.
My thought were a netbook would be £300 plus broadband £10 a month and then £30 mobile bill.
So if i could get a phone which can do everything it would be cheaper and more portable.
I just read about a new iphone any ideas whats different

I'm waiting for the N97, For me it looks like it will do what i want.
The iphone for me, at the moment dosent meet my needs so i wont be looking for one.
If the July leak/launch offers an iphone that meet my needs then i will give it a closer look.
Phones are like like marmite, you either love them or hate them

Take a read of some unbiased reviews and a look at some of the other phones on the market.
The iPhone is supreme at one thing.... Its the best iPhone out there.
Damn good, but to even suggest that other manufaturers have not caught up after 2 years...... hmmm
Maybe look at the specs on the Acer F1 ! Scary how thing are moving on. Or the Sony Ericsson Satio (Idou)
With regards to the OP, its a touch choice mate.
For what you want I would say a phone CAN do what you want.
So now you need to decide the following things..
Will you be using WiFi or away from base a lot/ will the network you are on offer free mobile WiFi?
Do you want a physical keyboard, if so, 12 button or QWERTY?
Streaming data from the web? Music and vid?
Playing much media on it, vid or music?
Running any processor heavy apps?
Using it for email much?
Contenders are....
Touch devices - iPhone / HTC Touch HD / Nokia 5800
Full QWERTY - G1 / Nokia N97 / Blackberry of sorts
Standard style phone - Nokia N85/N86 / another brand that I pay no attention to lol

and don't forget the big subsidies apple used to get the people to buy the damn thing. would it have sold in such high volumes if apple hadn't put the money in?

Are you mad, the iPhone is the first phone that people have had to pay for! It's the least subsidised phone on the market.

little bit further and gives you a trackball / joystick, but its camera & vid
capabilities are much reduced
ive tried haptic feedback screens & virtual keyboards..
non beat buttons / keys (for me at least)

99.9% of all phones have a cost attached to them, its only when you take the higher tarrifs they becone free ( of which they never are, your just paying for the handset through the life of the contract)
back in the late 90,s each upgrade/ new phone would cost me on average £50-100 & the contract on top.

Just to save a little confusion, when people on this thread say qwerty keyboard they mean hardware keyboard, the iPhone, HTC Touch thing and as far as I know the BB Storm have qwerty keyboards.
And whilst I'm here, how on earth are you going to use those big slide out keyboards in portrait mode or with one hand? Isn't that how the majority of us use our phones?

Mart, have a think back to one of the main reasons people were refusing to get an iPhone... yes that's right, you have to pay for it. I tried to convince people at the time that everyone pays in the end but some people just don't get it.

Jack I think yoo miss the point that while the N97 has a HUUUUGE! Keyboard (*removes tongue from cheek) when in use, you retail full view of the screen, which is something all touch devices can't do.
BB's (non Storm) are a piece of cake to use one handed, as are the N85/86.
Vallum, I personally would agree that the N97 is worth a look, as would be one of the new BB' or even the 8900 or Bold.
Not a fan of touch phones, but worth a look to see if its what suits you.
Good luck with whatever decision you make.

edit: just found out it comes with a touch screen alpha numeric keypad, so texting can be done via T9 in the candybar position
