hold down the BACK UP button on the box (NOT ON THE REMOTE) keep holding it, and power down .. keep holding it.. wait few seconds.. keep holding it.. power up.. keep holding untill FOUR LIGHTS appear on front of box, and message appears on screen about software download/ten mins.. let go of BACK UP button.
*this may or may not help but it reboots the system for you.

If you have a Thomson HD box then you can buy a replacement PSU with upgraded Panansonic capacitors on, or you can just fit the capacitors to your original board.
Reports from people who've done either are better signal strength, quicker and smoother EPG, no failed recordings or power downs.
Tempted to replace mine although my box has been fairly stable.

I guess you are out of warranty and don't have the insurance from Sky.
You might have a faulty hard drive. Assuming you don't want to upgrade to HD then you could buy a larger hard drive off the internet (e.g Samsung SP2514N £60 ish) and try that. If that doesn't help then you can put the larger drive in the replacement Sky+ box that you subsequently buy off eBay so you are able to save more than the miserly 40hrs standard.
If you do 'Services' then '401' then 'Select' you can access the engineer's menu on your box and try a full system reset or a planner rebuild which may help you in the first instance but you will lose any programs saved so watch them or save to dvd first.

Even then it only totals £169 for a box that was £300 + subs.
If you're going to pay £50 for a hard disk and money to buy a spare Sky+ box the difference would be minimal, and you get HD channels plus 160GB recording space.

Yeah as long as it's not a Thomson Sky HD box Mine does this a lot too, even switched itself off whilst watching a normal channel the other night. Basically the picture freezes up and can hear sound for a few seconds longer then powers off with just the stand-by red light. Have to un-plug from the mains leave for a minute and plug back in again . As someone has mentioned on here it's a PSU issue, and in some cases if left the offending capacitor can leak and knacker up the entire PSU. Some have fixed this with an extra cooling fan inside the case whilst others have upgraded their PSU to sort. I too am thinking bout replacing the PSU as I have had the box for over 2 years now.
