Default Working Tax credits

Now it's unlike me to sound like a scrounger (no honestly ), but I was my mothers earlier discussing my engineering apprenticeship and she mentioned as I turn 25 in July, I may be eligable for Working Tax Credits when I start in September.

As an apprentice, my salary for the first year is £6119, so I probably won't even hit a tax code. So I was thinking of looking if I am entitled to any credits etc to top up my earnings.

Any help, advice or experience appreciated, I'm not sure where to start looking or applying. I'm not married either if it makes any difference

That was the first thing Google brought up. Seems with my current situations (and some rough figures thrown in from earnings etc) I would be entitled to about £2258 ish. On a wage on only £6119, that could really help it seems.

Is there anyone on here that gets any working tax credits? Is it the same as signing on, i.e. you have to go to the Jobby and blend in with the pondlife?

That really is how little I know about this.

No signing on, money gets transferred into your account every month.

At the risk of sounding "fick" I assume it's there to top up earnings for those who are low earners then. As to start with I'll on a pittance and every extra bit of income will be treated like gold bullion

Just be wary of the horror stories of them making over-payments and demanding it all back, even though it's down to them.

Glad you mentioned that. My maths is pretty good, so if I do get anything, I'll keep close tabs on my interweb banking

I looked into it a while back, being on a fairly low wage. Think the figures were (to get anything at all) £12,000 if on your own, or £16,000 combined if you co-habit. Might be wrong, but I'm sure it was something like that.
