First of all, WAIT! Unless you must have the iPhone now, wait until at least June 8 - 12th. WWDC (Worldwide Developers Conference) is scheduled for those dates and it's rumored that a new iPhone will be announced, and possibly even released.

We know OS 3.0 for the iPhone is coming and options within this indicate features not available on the current hardware, which adds a little credence to the rumors.

Correct! If you don't want/need any of the new features that may be offered on the new iPhone then you could possibly get a discount on the current model once the new one is announced. Seems silly to me not to wait if you don't need the iPhone right away.

The white one looks grubbier faster whilst the black one shows up fingermarks faster..apart from that it is only good for matching your white linen trousers

Next generation iphones are reported to have a matte rubberlike finish on the back with all black bevel corners/edges

From a tech viewpoint there are no differences between a white or black iPhone, certainly not for the current model.

There is a rumor we'll see 4, 8, 16 and 32GB variants of the new iPhone, and it is possible features will be limited via software, for example, the 4GB iPhone may not have access to the App Store. At that point it's possible you may only get a white 4GB iPhone with black and white being present only on higher spec models, a bit like the original macbooks, I think the low spec one was only available in white.
