How many of you know a "Begbie"?
Just finished reading "Trainspotting" for the first time,(my god, the dialect writing is hard going) and I wondered how many of these psychotic characters might be walking the streets. I've not counted one among my personal associates but I've seen a couple in action over the years.
Just to refresh your memories!
So come on - tell us your tales! You can set up a different account if you're frightened of retribution.

I love the film and have also seen the live play which was even better than the film but never got round to reading the book!
I used to hang around with a gang that really were similar. Sadly most of them are still at it, its pathetic as they are older than me and i seeing them doing things i grew out of, is a bit pathetic.

The book is superb if you can get your mind into the dialect you're reading. A bit like forcing yourself to watch Rab C. and picking out one word in five until you get the hang of it (Yes, outraged scots people - I know Rab is a Weegie and the book is written in Edinburghian, and that both factions hate each other, lol)
The film creates scenes based on the book but uses fragments of different scenes within the book to do it. I think it was a necessary device to give the full flavour of the book in a different medium. Sick Boy's scene with the Bull Terrier, the skinhead and the air rifle for instance is much better explored in the book. Gives a real flavour of his character.

Ohhh yes and he was Scottish as well admittedly not as bad but was a f**kin' loon in his own right, no matter how big the other guy he wouldn't back down and i'd be there s**ting myself in case it just erupted.
He used to go out with my mates aunt who lived in Blackpool and we had a few nights out up there with him.
He wasn't scary looking or big or anything like that but his personality and aggressive nature was so feckin intimidating it was untrue, he was the sort of bloke when he was p***ed you'd be very careful with what you said (i.e. taking the p***) in case you offended him.
having said that i got along ok with him and once he saved me from possibly getting a major kicking once and that meant a lot to me.
A decent enough bloke but i just was careful at what i said to him
he must be at least 50 now though.
Despite his nature we had some wicked times in his presence up in Blackpool.
I think everyone knows the local nutter, or has a mate or aquaintance thats a bit loopy.
Its the quiet ones who i think you have to watch out for.

In a professional capacity, I'm "familiar" with several people of this nature. I don't socialise with them, you'll not be surprised to hear!
I loved the line in the film where the lead character says something along the lines of:
"He's a f*cking Psycho, but he's a mate so what are you supposed to do?"

Yeah that's usually how it is.
I.e. In pub, playing pool, watching telly, chatting up slags....xxxxxx comes out of toilet "Time to leave lads". And you just know he's kicked the **** out of some poor sod who looked at him the wrong way while he was having a **** or who owed him money or something............but he's a mate, what can you do
