Thumbs down FWD wheelspin: isn't it pathetic?

Is it just me or does a Front Wheel Drive car scrabbling vainly for grip after the driver's just dumped the clutch look really cr@p?

Even more so when said scrabbler's car has got brightly painted rear brake drums!

The absolute pinnacle of automotive "uncool".

a friend of mine used to have an black Escort with purple Drums on it, funniest thing ever. He loved it though!. Looking back it actually was a mint looking 1.3 but his girlfriend at the time rolled it

But yes, FWD wheelspins are ghey!

If you drop the clutch in reverse there is every chance the wheels won't spin all that much-it might even do a wheelie!

I seem to have read alot lately where people claim that modern day front wheel drive cars ar more than a match for a 10 year old scooby.

As well as the Impreza I also have a company car which is an 09 Plate Seat Leon Cupra which is a 240bhp turbo petrol. I can categorically say that this is complete bollix. The Cupra off the line always ends up being a traction control light illuminating /ECU hindering performance affair.

I would also say when pushed the Cupra feels nowhere near as stable as the Impreza. Under heavy braking, around or approaching a bend it feels like the **** end is is lifting too high and will kick out.

The Curpa does have kick *** front brakes with bright red calipers though

FWD is for girls... fact!!

I've got a Focus ST170 to get me from A to B. It's by no means a quick car, but the brutal 170bhp still manages to bring on the traction control at the most annoying times. It's usually left turned off now!

Well, the new Focus RS has 300 bhp through the front wheels. I currently have a Focus ST and although powerful it isn't as fun or safe as my sorely missed WRX STI Type R ...

Cool, is he related to Russ Swift, or is that name just a coincidence

From his website:-

With over 20 years experience at the wheel after starting his driving career performing stunts on the Garden lawn mower age 7. Paul now plans to concentrate on his display driving commitments following in the footsteps of stunt driving father Russ.

Had a loan of a Fiat 500 Abarth this week when my car was in for a service. 138BHP and span the wheels quite easily

I nearly bought an Alpha Romeo 147 GTA, until i test drove one for 24 hrs ( not non stop) and decided i just could'nt put up with the massive oversteer, and new front tyres it would need every 500 miles

OH Dave,

you disappointed me with that one, I thought you knew that Subaru did a FWD Impreza in the early years...

BUT it couldn't do that, I do agree !

My "old mans MGrover" spins its wheels quite annoyingly when pulling away from junctions in a hurry, not due to the clutch, i can get it away ok without intentionally spinning the wheels, its when you stick you foot down that the thing spins up, to be honest its probably the main thing i miss from the scoob (apart from proper climate control and a rear wiper lol)

i have a decent set of rubber on the thing as well (17" dunlop runflats)

the thing is, that the old scooby used to spin all 4 wheels so i suppose i am saving the environment in my own little way
