I-Phone 3G
Just bought the 16GB model today and I have to say, what an amazing piece of kit it is and I'm sure I haven't even touched the surface yet.
I know a lot of people on here have them so I have a few questions:
What's the best cover to buy? I bought the silicon cover but it doesn't actuallt protect the screen, I tend to scratch my screens in my pocket so I could really find something to protect the screen.
What are the best applications to download? My wife has already put Facebook on there and that's completely sold her on the I-Phone, she's just gutted she has to wait 5 months to get one
Jailbreaking - is it worth doing and what are the main benefits and risks? Is it fairly easy to do?
A few things I've noticed which I'm sure has been discussed before, no smilies on text messages so when people text me I see a collection of :-0 ;-) - no forward option or copy and paste.
Overall though I'm very impressed.

Your best bet is to post in the Computers Section
Jailbreaking - tbh, you've got to be careful, as it *can* bork your phone. But it will allow you to run all sorts of apps that aren't necessarily Apple-endorsed.
Don't know how it affects your warranty though.
Case wise, I've got something like an Incase one - kinda defeats the object of having a touchscreen if you can't use it!
Here's a good link for the cases - I'd just then hop on to Ebay to get it cheaper
Hope this helps

iPhone cover - InvisbleSHIELD every time... : invisibleSHIELD Full Body Protector for Apple iPhone - buy online from Blue Unplugged
I've only had my 16G iPhone a few weeks, and wasn't going to Jailbreak it... but now I have. Very easy to do (Quickpwn), seems very safe, and has opened up the capabilities incredibly.
Just the ability to have a custom wallpaper behind the icons is nice, but I've also appreciated being able to:
- copy and paste
- record video with the camera
- have the clock icon actually show the time
- have the weather icon show the actual temperature
- tether the iPhone to my laptop over wifi
- show a digital battery - giving 0-100% rather than the rather vague battery icon that's there as standard
...and that's all before we get to some of the more 'interesting' sides to Jailbreaking, esp Appulo.us. I'd say "do it"! You can always revent to standard if you want.

and visa versa. we even have our own social group. not slagging the iPhone but my Bold could do the majority of that stuff out of the box. each to there own I suppose. one thing you apple boys have that I would like on my blackberry as standard (without having to pay for it) is threaded text messages.
Us BB owners are also known to upgrade our OS like we change our underwear. Seems like not a week goes by that some new version of a new OS is leaked onto t'interweb thingy.

It is a great phone, not perfect but every update that comes out the phone gets closer to doing everything you need.
IMO dont jailbreak, You dont gain an awful lot by doing it, You can get some free things and save yourself a few quid but that compared to how much it is to replace the phone it doesnt really make sense.
I have never used a cover on my gen 1 or 3g, never had a problem with big scratches. The screen is scratch proof and lives up to that fairly well.
As for apps, it depends what you do, For me I got the little drum kit, decibel reader, casino games etc. But I use it for messing about. If its for work you can get work type apps, if its for leisure then whatever you sport of choice is you will get the an app for it.

I want one
I was gonna get one but didn't like the lack of numeric keypad for texting. I ended up getting the HTC Touch Diamond but it's too small for me really.
Thinking of buying an iphone and selling mine after but the touch diamond doesn't seem to be worth much

Well I've just fitted the Invisible Shield, a bit tricky but if oyu take your time it looks pretty damn good
Interesting point about the new phones, I was in two minds whether to buy one now in case Apple announce a new phone, in the end I thought if I think like that I'll never get one.
Have to leave it for 12 hours to dry so I'm gutted now

OK.. I'll admit that that one looks OK-ish... I still wouldn't have one, but it's nowhere near as bad as most of the stupid covers showing Fantasy or Cartoon based life-forms on there.

Big up the Blackberry massive ! lol
I think BB and iPhone's are clearly a marmite thing, love or hate, no in between.
Neil, threaded texts, as in all previous threaded together to recap the convo ? Mine has lol
And indeed I agree, 90% (maybe more) of the actual practical apps on the iPhone can be found for the BB too. I just love having a real keyboard
Join our group !!
iPhone/O2 did this last time round too. Idea being, you keep the iPhone, need it on a network, and O2 get more customers through it, based on you giving the iPhone to a family member and converting them too. Good business plan really.
PS, Hanley, congrats on the purchase, hope you are happy with it and problem free

I have an older Blackberry and its great for work but it is just that, a work tool, my phone is the LG Renoir, a creditable attempt but a couple of weeks after getting it I bought an Ipod Touch and the interface craps on it, and everything else I have ever used from a great height, the Apple stuff is the shape of things to come and this is from an total Apple Sceptic, I kind of wish I had got an Iphone but the camera is so poo, if they sort that one then the LG is getting flogged.

Jacko, what BB you using again ?
I love the idea of iPhone, but its the gimmick of it that appeals to me more than anything. And for that im like a kid opening toys at Xmas.... 1 hour later im bored and just want practical again. Hence I dont get on with touch devices.
I have to say the newer BB's are getting really good now. The Onyx and Lynx (codenames) are really getting there with the practical/nerdy geek split.
I have to agree Apple have really changed the way we do things, and changed the shape of the future, but im still not ready to convert to touch everything.
As a media only device (iTouch) I would get one. But again for on the go music, I am perfectly happy with the way a nano works. And I can operate it without being able to see it..
