Mexico as a Holiday destination
What's the appeal?
I saw a report from there yesterday, beach, sea, high rise hotels.
I'm guessing most don't venture to far from the hotel or visit any tourist destinations....it's a 3rd world country....a flipping long way....

It's fairly cheap for a Caribbean destination, much like Cuba and Dom Rep. The nicer places like Barbados and such like are significantly more expensive.
If you like beach holidays it has the warm climate, golden sands, palm trees, and everything else that people look for in that sort of break.
Also it may be a flipping long way for us but not so far for the Yanks and Canadians, it's a popular place for them too hence the large developments

I bet there's some cracking (or should that be 'crackling'..) deals for holidays to Mexico at the moment - prob get a week all-inclusive for a couple hundred as there must be so many cancellations. Be nice and quiet out there on the beach too no doubt!
And lets face it, whats the worst case scenario likely to be? Couple of days in bed with a touch of flu? Wouldn't put me off.

Americans go to Acapulco to
Depends on what you are after, San Cristobal is a great destination but its land locked so no beaches, Merida is cool, Tulum is nice, quiet and just down the road from Cancun, beaches to match it without all the annoying Americans, Playa Del Carmen too.
Not to mention Mexico City

We went to Mexico for the first time during May last year and stayed in Playa car - Riviera Maya.
IMO it's a very nice place to go, only time we saw high rised hotels was when we went to Cancun for the day (speed boat trip ) this was the typical "busy/built up" area that you would expect for a main holiday destination.
However, playa car is very different (about an hour from Cancun), hotel backed straight onto the beach and in that area they are only allowed to build the hotels so high so they don’t protrude the tree line, so everything has to "fit in" with the local area/surroundings etc.
We was there for two weeks and was going out of the hotel complex nearly every day and had trips etc booked every other day so plenty to do a see - old ruins, boat trips, snorkelling etc etc.
People are nice, food/drinks very good especially for fully inclusive.
While there you hear people saying "this is our 3,4,5th + time here" so there must be something to the place for people to keep returning. We certainly wouldn't have to think twice about going again.

mexico is brilliant as above i went to Playacar which was brilliant, it worked out a lot cheaper to go there than Spain. I paid £900 for two weeks all inclusive, great food all drinks (24 hours if you wanted) like another poster said all the mayan temples which is facinating, swimming with dolphins, i'd go back in a shot - just not at this present moment.
Just try to forget the kidnappings and people getting their heads cut off.

Well i got back from Mexico City 2 weeks ago (yes i have been in quarantine, its crap!) and i have to say its one of my favorite holiday destinations.
I'm not the type of person that likes a 'package holiday' or a 'beach holiday' so Mexico City is perfect. I do have a friend that lives there so i did have a free local guide! I wandered off the tourist path and into where the locals live and play! Its fascinating to see everything and the local food that i tried was amazing! I did do the touristy thing like visiting the pyramids and the tequila farms, which were great too. And the tourist bus around Mexico city is great, there's so much Mexican/Spanish history around they they are still discovering themselves it makes for an interesting tour.

Being in North America it seems that Mexico is the North American equivalent of Spain, as it's foreign enough to be different, but also close to home.
Cancun is the equivalent of Ibiza/Magaluf, ie; drunk and parting teens/chavs, typically seen during "spring break".
Again, akin to Spain, there are some lovely parts where the non teenies can go an enjoy themselves.
Oh, and where else could the septics go to see a donkey show

Ok.... this is from someone who has lived in Mexico (Playa del Carmen)
Avoid Cancun and it is great..... Cancun is like Blackpool for Americans
Head slightly lower to Playa del Carmen - Playa Carr for a bit more upper class.... Mosquito Blue is lush in Playa del Carmen...
Head a bit further south to Tulum.. loungers paradise.... head slightly inwards for Maya civilizations....
Head to Tobasco for traditional Mexicano etc..............
Head to Puebla and Mexico City for shear crowds!
Mexico is the one place I would love to be able to retire to comfortably.
