Default Dere's a BAT in ma garden...

...what am a gonna do...

..to identify them? Fascinating to watch them buzzing around the house right above my head. One moment over the drive way, the next in one part of the main garden, the next moment in another part. It's beginning to look the the Adams family house around here..

I've love to know what type they are and where the hibernate (do bats hibernate?) over winter as we've had them for a few years now. Short of capturing one I don't know how I'll find out. They are a protected species I understand.

Fast indeed. You can see the quick change of direction to catch a fly. And silent too.

The ones round here aren't silent, depending how fast they are going, they go from slightly buzzing to flapping to whooshing if you get my meaning.

Pipistrelles flying over our garden for about the last week. Earlier than usual

This might help.

Which ever type they are, I don't think they're roosting in the house. I suspect they are using the old barn a few houses away. Unless they have found a place in the eaves somewhere. I've never seen or heard them when I've been in the loft though.

My mother had a flat in Cardiff years ago and there were bats in the building. Huge number of them. I used to watch them for ages.

Saw a TV program last week, a bloke was catching and ringing bats for study purposes. He was wearing a pair of f**k off thick gloves. Said that UK bats rarely carry rabies
I thought the UK was rabies free?

Didn't some bat enthusiast (or whatever they are called) die of rabies after being bitten by a bat quite recently?

ETA just googled it, seems it was a few years ago, unless there is a more recent case. http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/scotland/2509375.stm

Another ETA, seems like there is more recent rabies news with bats http://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/1940...or-rabies.html

Always appear when I am fishing in the late evening. They are quick too. I once hooked one when it caught the artificial fly that I was casting, its doing about 60 odd during a cast!

Glad to say it was not injured and flew away none the worse. The hook did not penetrate him thank goodness. I once caught a Sand Martin the same way, in the daylight, He got away with it too.

cool, we had bats for a long time in our roof, but they moved on when we had all the soffets done, even though we left enough space for them! they must not like that new house smell!!

ours were pipistrelle's and they were attracted to the nice warm side of the house and the pond with lots of bugs flying about.

from what we gathered, our house was a summer nursery where the mommies came to give birth to their babies, and in total we had around 400 in there!
