Gaelic Signage is Northern Ireland, why?
I just took a wee trip to Londonderry today working and noticed a hell of alot of Gaelic writing under English signs plus some Gaelic only signs and as much as i'm a live and let live person What the **** is the reason for having any signs in Gaelic? its a dead language which no one uses!
I was asked did i want to learn it back in Secondary school and i thought the same then, why should i was 3/4years of my life using a language which isn't even used in its own country? least the French speak French!
Best of all, is that when visiting the loo there sign above the door(quite high up) had Gents Toilets with it in Braille underneath, i fooking couldn't help giggling

i have to seriously dissagree tbh mate . alot of my family speak Gaelic and are proud of the language and its heratage and it is still spoken in alot of ireland . maybe not the part of ireland that has been robbed by you know who !
for example!
lets say the spanish come over here and take over the bottom half of england and change the languge to spanish . would u speak spanish or fight to keep your english heratage . think of it like that . something to think about eh!!
just my bit . id like to see it happen over here to see how u like it !

Massively. Being bilingual is like going down the language gym. It one of the most complex thing humans learn and it stuns me the competence of my trilingual 5 year old. Those brain cells are definitely well active - even doing 10 words in Greek on hols. |It was so intuitive & natural. More IS more

as far as i am aware the UK includes Northern Ireland. this is an example of the sorts of things that makes the world think that people from ireland are stupid bog trotters. at least get yer facts straight before speaking.
As for irish, i would have loved to learn irish at school, but coming from the "protestant" side of the fence that was a no no back then. the irish heritage is immense, the irish mythos is second to none. the celts have a long and varied history, pre christian era.
try The Ulster Cycle and The Táin

With Ireland being a small wee island and not having a great export market would it not be more benifical to learn a different language at school other that Gaelic. I learnt French and although it has been of little use i think it has been of more use than learning Gaelic would have been.

They've decided its easier and more modern than Gaelicn as many inventions have a English name anyway so it is easier. The only way things could be different is if things were like Holland.
The Dutch kn ow their language is a nightmare. no one makes films in it so they all speak English (brilliantly) with a slight US accent.
As for the Spanish... colonisation and language change was their big thing!!!! They were well known for killing off local populations while they did it too.... here's a list for you! Continents, Countries and Capital cities.

Spain - Madrid
Central America
Guatemala - Guatemala City
Honduras - Tegucigalpa
El Salvador - San Salvador
Nicaragua - Managua
