In actual fact, fighter piloting becomes surprisingly boring after a while. You only do short trips because they dont carry much fuel, rush around the sky pretending to shoot each other down, and go back home to land, get some more fuel and do it all over again.

Low level ground attack is much more fun and has enormous variety of things to do. Not only that, in the bigger bombers you get to go round the world from time to time. When you are up at height, mach 1+ looks much the same as any other slower speed anyway.

Do Harriers even carry air to air weapons anymore? Thought it was only the ground attack variants in use now GR9 is it?

The Harrier is a very good ground attack machine, and can give a good account of itself as a fighter too.
