Fuel starvation or crap in the tank?

Did you drain it dry last the last time you used it??

The tank should just be bolted on.

The petrol from last year will have degraded a bit, probably.

Had the same with mine last week as I forgot to let it run dry last year.

No idea re filters.

I took my tank off, drained the old petrol and the cleaned mine out using a bit of fresh unleaded. Sorted after that.

Check your MAF sensor and get some optimax in there with a splash of octane booster.
Have a look to make sure your wastegate is opening and closing freely, and maybe replace your VTA dumpvalve with an OEM one. If that doenst get her going, give Andy F or Bob Rawle a shout - it may need a remap.

I don't know what it is with petrol these days. I have to drain the tank and clean out the float chamber/jet every year on the mower and then refill with fresh out of a sealed can (well, last year's petrol, but its from a sealed container, so is still fresh).

4 years ago I could use just drag it out the shed and fire it up no worries. Nowadays it refuses to run properly on anything but fresh fuel after being left standing over winter.

RD500 has the same issue

Did you disconnect the Crank Sensor after the last Oil change on it?

Maybe the slow running jet on the carb ? I'd give it a good clean out. What sort of mower is it mate ?

Does it run on petrol/oil mix? If the carb was left with fuel in it at the end of the season, the petrol evaporates and the carb jets can get blocked by the oil which is left. I always switch the fuel off and let the engine run to drain the carb when it is stopped for the last time in the year.

Mine started after just a couple of pulls having just left it in the shed all winter with fuel in. Sounds like you lot have temperamental mowers

If it was running fine last year it's going to be bad fuel or a gummed up carb, or both.

You probably need to strip with carb down and get to work with some carb cleaner.

Did my first mow of the year recently - I think I must have pulled the starter cord over 30 times - then it fired up and was fine! Knackered my shoulder though!

I would think that; but after draining the float chamber and filling with fresh fuel and priming it, it always starts first pull. And from that point onwards always starts first pull for the rest of the year.

Its just the first start every year it just doesn't want to know; maybe after enough pulls it would eventually fire, but my limit is five pulls and its out with the spanner to sniff the spark plug Nowadays I don't even do that; I just drain out the fuel tank and float chamber and refill it.

My Stihl chainsaw wouldn't start for love nor money the other day. Turned out the air filter was clogged with the resin of its fallen victims.

Fallen victims - great line!

Oddly my mower (Husqvarna with a Honda engine) used to start very easily and the strimmer used to be hard work - it's now the other way around.

Try to run the carb dry before parking it up, the fuel evaporating from the float chamber can lead to it gumming up.

But seeing as you've sorted it, happy mowing.......
