Default seeing the specialist.... Again - How?

is there anyone on here who knows the NHS system a little better than the layman?

I could do with seeing the specialist again, the one who treated me last time for the burns I had after an accident, but dont know the procedure. Its basically the same problem I had 6 months ago when I last saw him and its flaired up again. Treatment was needed last time.

Is it back to the GP who will then refer me to the specialist? or can I just cut out the middleman and deal direct with someone who knows about my complaint and has dealt with me before?

I ask as when I lived in Japan I could contact the hospital department directly and they would organise an appointment without any referals, but this isnt Japan - hence the question.

Anyone know or am I going to have to wait 6 months again

Truthfully, I don't know for sure, but it may be worth contacting the department you originally went to, to see if you can just go direct.

Tbh, I wouldn't be surprised if you have to go back to your GP to be referred, but if you try, it can't hurt. I am having a right pita at the minute with referals and appointments, so I hope you have more luck than I seem to be having.

Back to Gp for referral but also speak directly to your specialist secretary at the same time if you know their name to try to line it up more quickly

It depends on how the situation was left with the specialist..... if the consultant episode was left "open" then you can phone the consultant's secretary and ask for an appointment.

If you were discharged then oficially it's a trip to the GDP to arrange an appointment through "choose and Book" with your consultant of choice.

I'd phone the secretary just to check on their PAS (patient administration system) your current status and to ask for an appointment anyway

I would have thought that you have to be referred by your GP if you were cleared by your consultant upon recovery. Might not do any harm to ring his office and ask his advice though.

Phoned them today and the news is bad, they cant see me again without referal from my GP, so back to square one, again! So asked what the length of the waiting list? 11 months at present. the longer its left the worse it gets!

11 months! however if I return to my GP then tell them I have seen the specialist on a number of occasions and they should be able to fast track me. which means I should be seen in 8 months!

Oh! well off to the GP's tommorow.

I would be very suprised if its 8-11 months.

1) See if your GP operates something called 'choose and book'. If he does he may well have a choice of a local private hospital to refer you to (paid for by the NHS). Your specialist will probably also consult at that same private hospital and will be able to see you there much sooner.
I know it sounds like a mental system, but thats Nu Labour for you

2) In general all hospitals are working towards an 18 week target, with differing success.. But 8 months is unacceptable, mention this to your GP, and/or write to the Chief Executive of your hospital

See my post number 4...Deep has summed it up 100%

I'm an NHS Consultant (Teeth) and I currently have a target of seeing new patients within 11 weeks and treating them within 18 weeks (see the link from Deep).

My catchment area is about a half a million people so I'm kept busy LOL. stepping back to 2002 I had a five year waiting list for treatment

Cancer / heart / acute patients have different targets.

Your referral should be within the 18 week "patient journey". Ask your GDP or contact your local PALS.

if it was me and the best way to get response is to ring the specialists secretary, its only been 6 months since your last appointment?, be polite even she/he isn't, it might just save you haveing you gp re refer to the specialist and wait as said 8-12 weeks.

I have got a feeling that GP's are discouraged where possible from referring people to specialists. Might even get a bonus for fulfilling a target!
