Default Found out this evening I'm now unemployed!

I knew it was gonna happen for months now and finally it has, So what do I do? I've worked since leaving school, never been on the jam roll etc, so I dunno what to do regarding getting a new job, I once went to a job centre to try and find a new line of work as I was pissed off with my job at the time, found a job which really appealed to me and went for it, I asked the lass in the bum shop about it and she said 'How long have you been unemployed' I said 'I'm not, I'm looking to change jobs' She replied 'Sorry this job is only open to people who have been unemployed for 6 months or more' WTF!

I really dunno what to do as my trade is now **** up due to the recession, no one wants new flooring, any ideas of what to do?

Sorry to hear about this Tam. Are you in a position to train for a new trade - an apprenticeship, maybe. What would you like to do?

Tam... Jobcentre tomorrow morning. Sign on the dole. Then ask what the name of the company is that work alongside the Jobcentre re. training and help in your area is called. Here in Scunny theres a place called "Working Links". Depending on your circumstances, you may be required to attend so many mandatory meetings at a place like this. I was.

Anywho, I went on my own accord and there is help available there. You can have "workshop" sessions to improve things like your CV, interveiw techniques, letter writing etc. They can provide funding for training also. Not to mention the access to the latest jobs pretty quick and general all round help. You do get some undesirables there as they are required to attend to claim their benefits, but if like me you are actually looking to help yourself, theres a lot of help available.

Jobcentre don't do this any more (which was my belief), hense why I suggest the above.

Good luck and if you want any more info, pm me. Certainly don't wanna give anyone scope to have a pop at me/my situ.

That's is terrible news fella, unfortunately there is a lot of it going on at the moment!!

There are a million and one things you could do now mate, you could go self employed and tout yourself to fitting companies etc the likes that do shops etc as they will always need people to do work, fitting floors etc

Secondly, depending on your pay out and how much time and you circumstances you could sell up totally, leave this ****e hole and travel for a bit and work abroad, try your hand elsewhere.

thirdly find a job that really interests you like you said you saw before and have a pop at it, go get an apprentice position or something, it's NEVER too late to learn new stuff.

In the mean time there is no need to fear signing on, you have put a **** load of cash in to this country every month when you get paid, why not claim some of it back!! Why should the truely lazy f$ckers get all of your hard earned cash !

I hope you find something soon matey!

Agree with the above. I'm 24 and in the process of applying for an apprenticeship that pays £117 a week to start with. But I would like to learn the trade, and it's still more than any jobseekers I could claim.

What line of work did you do Tam? I presume you weren't a Gynaecologist

Cheers guys I do have an HNC in media and communications which I only done as I love all the photoshop stuff lol, maybe I can do something with that But in reality flooring is the only thing I really know, I am a specialist in designer flooring and enjoyed my job and I'm always proud of the finished result of my days work, money was great too, but that is kinda useless when no one wants it, as for re-training or an apprenticeship Paul, I think at 39 I'm well past that As for signing on the dole.... No way! I'm not becoming a state scrounger, I'll do anything rather than become a doley!!!

If you don't have too many ties in the UK then going overseas could be an option, to somewhere where you skills are in demand. Experience really counts for skills like flooring, so would be a pity to lose that.

I guess in the short term, just get a CV sorted out, and apply for LOADS of so that you get yourself back into paid work, and then decide what you want to do while you've got an income.

Sure you'll get something sorted anyway, must be easy to feel down about the whole situation, but keep your chin up!

Whilst moving house, job, life, mental state... I signed on, I paid in for years, time for them to give some of it back....
I used LearnDirect to do a load of I.T. related stuff, then when I was bored of that, I got them to send me on a fork-lift driving course.

Good Luck !

Oh I forgot about that, I have a high reach forklift licence too, I could use that eh?? Good thinking bud, I have to admit it would probably get really boring eventually but at least I'd be bringing in some dosh!! Nice one I'll pop along to the new Tesco mega warehouse and ask about tomorrow, Zero job satisfaction, but a job is a job

Jeez Tam sorry to hear this.

Tbh, if you need to claim anything in the short term(you may not), then claim away, you are not scrounging, you are merely taking back a bit of the money they pinched off you while you were working, so effectively you are taking your own money back.

Anyhow, I hope you get sorted. You maynot want to go into a job like forklifting as it won't give you satisfaction, but it could provide a stopgap until something else comes along, whether that be a pick up in your line of work, or your own complete change of direction, and don't think for a second you are too old to make a change. Being frightened of change and taking a leap, is what has led to me being in the same ****e job after 10 years.

Good luck and chin up, you'll be ok.
