Natasha Richardson dies.
BBC NEWS | Entertainment | Actress Richardson dies aged 45
Really sad, a "nothing" incident on a nursery slope...
Just goes to show how frail the human body can be!

Very sad, but if any good can come from it then more people will wear helmets when skiing.
In Italy children under a certain age have to wear them.

Yup, omly and handful of countires require helmets to be worn, seems sensible that all skiers wear them considering the possible dangers.

A sad story indeed.
=======
My, now grown up, kids used to wear cycle helmets although I heard there was doubt in some quarters that they actually reduced accidents. One factor being that motorists didn't take so much care if they passed a cyclist with a helmet on.
But I am not sure I wold insist on a helmet for a lesson on a gentle nursery slope with snow.
But I do worry when kids go off ice skating as they are not very good and you can fall over hard and quickly onto ice which seems a bit iffy to me. But it seems that very few on the rink wear helmets. What is your experience?

My son is a very keen dinghy sailor and there are numerous incidents where the kids get hit about the head by the boom. At some training centres they wear helmets, but none of the 'professionals' would wear a helmet. A healthy respect for the boom and being able to read and avoid it are all part of the sport. There are issues with extra weight on your head when trying to swim, and the restriction on visibility and hearing are also considered to outweigh the advantages
I don't think there should be compulsion on wearing helmets to ski as generally you are in control of your own destiny. Not like cycling helmets on the road where it is the other muppet who causes the problems.
This is such a rare occurrence that I think we may find out that she was predisposed to suffer disproportionate consequences in this type of accident.
RIP Natasha.

As a lad I was clouted pretty hard by the boom in a dingy. You do learn quickly but a bit dangerous if you are on your own and get knocked into the water in a semi-conscious state.
The answer would be to have a rubberised "softening" strip that you clip onto the boom for learners. Or a braking device at the mast end that prevents the boom from swinging at a million miles an hour. May be they do that now?

I go mountain biking and there is no way I'd be without a helmet off road. Far too much stuff to hit and I fall off a bit to often anyway Anybody who does ride off-road without one is just another statistic waiting to happen.

RIP Natasha. Sad news for her family.
Seems the media have jumped on the 'safety' bandwagon as she wasn't wearing a helmet, but then she was on a gentle slope and saw no need for one, it's not as though she was skiing off piste with lots of rocks about. Everyone makes choices and we can't live if we are wrapped in cotton wool for life!
Hopefully the H&S ***** will not get too worked up about this incident and try to insist that we all wear helmets. I mean, I could fall and hit my head harder than she did just by falling down the stairs. Should I wear a helmet as soon as I get out of bed? At the end of the day all these studies that show that 'x' people could be saved if they wore helmets are a crock of sh)t as the only way to know is if the same person had *exactly* the same accident with and without a helmet. That way we'd know if the helmet saved them or not.
Anyway, rant over ...
Dave
PS: the same arguments are now being used for skiier (and cycle) helmets as were raised for motorcycle helmets years ago - and I am a biker ...

Why would wearing a helmet reduce accidents? Wouldn't have thought it would change anything. The important bit is that if you do have an accident and whack your head on the kerb you'll walk away from it, not wake up in hospital if you're lucky.

Sorry. My comments were misleading but I hope you understood the point I was trying to make in that you may have a slightly greater chance of having an accident if you wear a helmet. I'm not sure I go along with that argument and I know if I fell off a bike I would prefer to be wearing a helmet.
But I really don't want to take this thread off topic. dl

I seem to remember that there was a theory that when people wore seat belts and had airbags, that they felt less likely to be seriously injured in an accident, so that encouraged them to drive faster and with less care.

Quite, wearing a helmet and padding etc when on ski slopes will only encourage one to go faster and be braver... IMO anyway. Although I dont need helmets and padding, As proven with my stupid fekked up leg from Snowboarding 6 weeks ago

Sad news indeed, espacially considering it probably wasn't a big crash. As Sanzy said, the PM will be interesting.
Incidentally just found out a friend of mine who I'm supposed to be shooting with a week sunday is currently in hospital with multiple spinal fractures after a MTB accident on Cannock Chase.

Although quite why the "anti recreational mourners brigade" need to jump on every 'x' has died" thread is beyond me.
Surely best to ignore if you don't approve?
Seems like some people just have to let everyone know just how much they don't see the point in something on every occasion!
Too much like hard work!
