What's a good sat nav?
As per title, wife wants/needs one.
Price not important, but don't want all-singing, all-dancing.
She is CRAP with technology, so it needs to be simple to use.
Would prefer avaailability of Europe mapping too.
Any recommendations? And where to buy?

I have a Nuvi 255 as it comes with all of Europe (including Eastern Europe) which makes it much more cost effective than TomTom.
( Garmin Nuvi 255 Satellite Navigation System with Full: Amazon.co.uk: Electronics & Photo )

Another vote for Garmin, I have the nuvi 250W, complete with street level Europe maps. Proved invaluable abroad.
Probably been superseded now, but I think the 260W or 265W is the one now, about £120.

has anyone had experience of both Tom Tom and Garmain
I,ve used Tom Tom -- and it seems pretty intuiative -- but I need another one for the wife, Garmain seem better value (re Europe)
or are they both much of a muchness

I'd second this, TomTom all the way. Very easy to use but also pretty powerful. The new IQ Routes technology is very good for avoiding typically congested routes.
Using TomTom HOME you can upgrade maps, or get additional ones when required (eg USA), or get speed-camera updates and TomTom are very good at releasing new software with additional features FOC.
There's a huge number of POI (point of interest) files for TomToms - with everything from M&S stores to Comet, motor-racing circuits and Indian restaurants... very useful!
I've got a 730T and the other half has a 500 - both work very well and just about any TomTom unit will do what you need... some include detailed maps of Europe and others include just major roads (and others are just UK)... some have RDS-TMS support and others can use Traffic/Hi-Def Traffic (3G/GPRS based) so you can get traffic/accident information. Pretty much every option available, with prices to match...
If it were me, I'd look at the TomTom refurbed units from TotalPDA - spend the same as you'd budgeted but get a better unit:
Refurbished TomTom - TotalPDA Ltd.
DN
PS If you know where to look for the info, it's easy to put whatever 'latest and greatest' map you want on a TomTom (UK, Europe, USA, SA, etc. etc.) without charge... so the best route IMHO is to buy the best piece of hardware and put whatever map you want on it later.
