Recession: Good or bad time for innovation?
Just something that I was talking to someone about the other day. I think that a recession is good for inventive ideas, ways to use existing things in different ways but extremely bad for any kind of technological innovation.
Any thoughts?

I don't see the difference, you can still make a killing with technological innovation in a recession, if you can do the same as a competitor but for cheaper, maybe less bells and whistles, you'll make money. Or as you say, inventive ideas using existing technology. For example, I bet sites like eBay make a killing during this time..!

I think recession is good for innovation and inventiveness.
I used to work for a company that had little accountability and a lot of cash - they spent lots of cash on great cerebral ideas - most of it wasted.
In another company with little cash they made these ideas really work in very innovative and focused ways.

Certainly good for innovation, lots of business process analysis and re-engineering work going on to streamline companies, helping them cut costs and improve margins.
Remember PWC's strapline: Consultancy - if you're not part of the solution, there's good money to be made prolonging the problem
