Backing up the kids DVD's
My kids have a mountain of original DVDs, Disney, Shrek, Thomas the Tank etc.
These get damaged really easily as they get left out of the cases and covered in scratches and sticky finger prints.
I've already bought 3 Nemos, 2 Cars and a Peter Pan!
What is the best way to back them up so that the kids can merrily destroy the copies and I can keep the originals safe?
Steve
PS Apologies if this should be in Computer Related as I expect that's what I'll use for backup!

I use CloneDVD and AnyDVD from SlySoft Products | Copy Movie DVDs with AnyDVD and CloneDVD
Then you can {cough} go online and download a cracked\licensed version for free {cough}

Or you can pay 70 euro (whatever that is in real money) for 2 years of upgrades/support. If you have the coin pay it as these guys churn out updates frequently. If you don't then I refer you to Floodboy's solution.

I have a Popcorn Hour Media Extender connected to my LAN.
I used DVD Shrink to take ISO images of my complete DVD collection, kids DVDs included and they've been put in the loft.
All DVDs are now streamed to the TV via the Popcorn.
Granted this limits you to watching DVDs on only one TV, unless you buy a second Popcorn.
No more scratched kids DVDs though, now they look at the Tv screen and point to the DVD cover they want to watch, I press a button and it plays.

You can use alcohol but majority of retail DVDs are DL which are quite a bit more expensive then single layers.
If you do use DL o it discs I would use is verbatims

As said, convert to AVI on a Hard drive and play on the xbox or a DVD drive with USB connection, no more discs ever again and they'll never be worn out

I have a 500gb media HDD which I can just drag'n'drop full DVD's onto, but usually just d/l torrents. Also plays MP3's and JPEG's, connects 720p via component and has digital audio output. USB stuff straight from the laptop. About £130 from Maplins.

DVD Decrypter to ISO image. Use DVDShrink to to strip unwanted features and transcode the content(you can retain everything, retain menus and most things, or write a 'main feature' only disc); then write the 4.3GB ISO image onto a writable disc using any writing application. CloneDVD will be slightly easier, but no better, if as good.

In theory yes, but in practice I dont think that Ive come across one DVD that DVD-D has struggled with. It certainly never amounted to the problem that was promised. That said, I barely copy anything now...

I've come across loads of films that Decryptor can't crack (I have >400 movies now) All a DVD needs is some DIR structure protection n dvd-d is borked. The same applies for DVDShrink, although this seems to suffer less, but it won't do all. Latest Rambo movie for example.
AnyDVD is the daddy atm. Nothing has failed to be ripped yet.
