As the above where is the best place to get one from, or if happening soon will Vodaphone or Orange be offering them them on contract.

O2 is a non starter as I can not get reception at work.

Can't see it happening I'm afraid, Apple tend to go with one carrier in each country it is distributed in.

It can be unlocked however if you know how to.

It is sold sim-free in other countries for $700 for the basic version, so you'd be looking at £700 here.

You can buy an O2 pay as you go for £400.

Remember that unlocking and jailbreaking the phone are two seperate things. It is only in the last month that you have been able to unlock the 3G iPhone. Tutorials can be found here: iClarified - iPhone - How to Unlock the iPhone 3G

The 2G one is easy to unlock (and is slightly better made from what I've seen), but it doesn't have GPS or the faster internet access (3g).

Doesn't it reset every time you update?

Yes. Although the updates are not that often and usually a tool is released with a few days to unlock/jailbreak it again.
