Default Trips to Vegas, anyone been????

Looking to take myself and the Mrs to Vegas for a 4 night stay in November. What hotels would people recommend? Looking for somewhere quite decent. Seen a deal for the Bellagio inc flights for £1200 for the 2 of us. Thought this was quite good?

Cheers

I went about 12 years ago, and stopped in the Excaliber which was really nice, it also has the MGM, and the Luxor( I think, pyramid shaped hotel) accross the road. Someone told me the hotel rates were cheaper midweek for obvious reasons.

Just come back from a works do in Vegas. In all honesty it isn't my kind of place. But on a more sombre note - it is far from cheap - anywhere on the strip is just an excuse to rip off tourists. The exchange rate is dire at the moment too. The level of credit card fraud is unbelievable. For every transaction (no matter how small) you will need to present your driving license or passport along with your card. Despite staying at a decent hotel (The Mirage), 3 of our party had fraudulent transactions (in one case over $3000) on their cards from somewhere in the hotel.

If you do want to go there then the Bellagio, MGM Grand or Wynn are probably the best (but not cheap).

I hated the place with a passion, I found it dirty, hot, noisy, smelly, sleazy, expensive and full of really scummy people. We booked in for three nights but stayed one and got the hell outta there ASAP

It's kind of like Blackpool but on a bigger scale

We hated it all, honest Instead of staying there we used the extra few days to stay at and explore the Grand Canyon (West and South). We did the Skywalk - awesome - and also did a long helicopter flight over the South Rim of the Canyon and a shorter one over the Hoover Dam. Then because we had more time we were able to drive out to Monument Valley

Its a superb place for a holiday so much to see and do , we`ve been several times on USA trips

Unless of course you try and do it on the cheap and then as with everywhere you`ll find the seedier side of life .

I`d recommend the Wynn , its very very good . It is available for about $120 a night if you look hard enough or are a regular customer. This was the view from our room on our last visit :

Ive been twice, first time we stayed at circus circus I think, and the 2nd at the Luxor.

I thought the hotel prices were quite reasonable but it was 1.9 dollars to the pound at the time.

£1200 for flights and staying at the bellagio sounds pretty good to me

ps. forgot to mention I thought it was amazing!!!

The best thing I did when I was there was goto the Hoover Dam - that is amazing The rest of it I found superficial, false and a simple rip off (for example helicopter ride to the Grand Canyon helicopter trip booked on the strip - $330 per person, Grand Canyon helicopter trip booked at a site just by the Hoover Dam $30 per person).

We also had examples of taxi rides to and from the hotel costing $40 or $50 when the actual cost is no more than $17. I just found the place incredibly cynical. The whole veneer of 'fun' wears off very quickly and looking at the rather sad people sat at the slots for 10 / 12 hours a day was very off putting.

I must have gone to a different Las Vegas

I fecking love the place, been there twice and given the chance would go back tomorrow, the Bellagio is a fantastic hotel. If you can afford a bit more, ask for a lake view room and watch the fountains at night from your window-superb.

It's a place you'll love or hate,as has been demonstrated above.

Edited to add i too went when the exchange rate was attractive so it may be a bit more expensive since i was last there in '07.

cheers for the feedback, and the moment the difference between direct and non direct flights are doble the price. Is this normal?

Quite expected people to say love or hate it

I guess you'll be going via Chicago?

Don't think double the price is normal tbh but it going non-direct means being able to go and not then take it!

I know that only Virgin used to fly direct from the UK to Vegas, not sure if that's still the case.

I have been; it was OK... a bit of a disappointment but then maybe I set my expectations too high with thinking the casinos would be more classy... they aren't! They are cheap and tacky and the drinks girls outfits are crap... big disappointment for my other half!

Hoover Dam was more fun

I would recommend some of the shows though; O (The Bellagio's Cirque du Soliel performance with the HUGE bowl of water in it) is great as is Kris Angel's Cirque du Soliel show and if you are lucky he might bring his missus, ex Playboy favourite, Holly Maddison! Blue Man Show is ace but be prepared to be painted in the front rows (you get a raincoat!!) and some audience participation which is cringeworthy if you're not into that!

Virgin still fly direct cus we tried to switch from a BA connection flight not so many months back.

I wouldn't go back to be honest... been there, done it, was bored!

What kind of 24 hour city stops serving food at 10pm!?

Thumbs up

Ali and I stayed at the Bellagio in a room overlooking the fountains.

Very nice indeed, maybe a little more expensive than other places but lifes too short to slum it.

It took me a little while to work out that the curtains were remote control but once I did it was all good. Looking out of the window - Fountains to the front and Caesars Palace to the left.

Had a lot of good fortune - won $1000 on a poker video game. Took $950 back to the room and managed to turn the $50 into $1300 or so on the craps.

Happy Days.

Probably won't go back though as I don't think I'll b as lucky next time.

If you do stay at the Bellagio - Eat at Michael Minas at least once, Not cheap - But Fantastic!!!!

The Bellagio is amazing not just because of the 6* but due to location in the middle of the strip. It's a LONG walk to anywhere (no the Luxor isn't close, it just LOOKS like that because it's HUGE) but make sure you get a fountain view room. 5th floor upwards is best. Unless you spend 100k a night at the tables, don't expect any staff to even notice you. They're friendly though when asked things, like can they fish your expensive sunglasses out the lake (yep, nice man on a dingy comes out with a net ).

If you want to do a bit of horse riding (just saying..) go to the West Canyon Ranch, it's awesome. The heli ride is best as the track by road is really 4x4 only, a real hire car killer

Definitely go and see O or KA. I've seen KA, and wouldn't have believed it if I hadn't seen it with my own eyes. How they don't kill half the cast every night is beyond me.

I spent two weeks there, 5 days in Vegas, the rest touring around through Monument Valley, the lakes, everywhere. Had a superb time and would do it all again tomorrow if the exchange rate wasn't so bad...

I went to Vegas as part of my honeymoon and spent 4 nights at the Venetian (the other 2 legs of the trip were New York and Lake Louise).

In no way am I a gambler but as an experience I loved the place because it was like nowhere I'd ever been before. The hotel is nearly in the same league as the Bellagio and provided an excellent base for exploring. Whilst we were there we visited the Stratosphere (went on the rides and ate at the excellent restaurant), the Hoover Dam, the Star Trek Experience at the Hilton and saw a Penn & Teller magic show. To cap it all we came out of the casino $150 up from playing blackjack

I really want to go back to do all the bits I missed.

Has anybody noticed that as a rule of thumb you can tell the quality of the hotel from how attractive the waitresses are on the casino floor? The Venetian and the Hilton were both very attractive, less so at Treasure Island.

We found it was cheaper to eat and the quality was good at the casino restaurants.

My Wife actually commented on it before me which gave me the go ahead to discuss it further, if I'd have just mentioned it out of the blue she would have probably slapped me for being a perv. One of the women in Treasure Island reminded me of the hooker from My Name is Earl, even down to the bad teeth.

Reading this thread really makes me want to go back, can't afford it at the moment though because I've just been made redundant from the IT department at Woolies

Hoover Dam is worth a stop off as you drive up to the Hualapi Reservation for a good look at the Grand Canyon :

Bellagio fountains :

View down the strip from the top of the Stratosphere :

Defo a place to be experienced. Despite playing poker for a living I'm not a big gambler and probably spent less than 3 hours total gambling the whole time I was there (a week). But there's plenty to see and do and experience and strangely I want to go back much more than I thought I would when I was there at the time. Now that I've been once I think I could plan a second trip far better so that I'd enjoy myself even more.

I would say this though. It's not a place to go if you don't have much of a budget - It's the sort of place you go when you are happy to burn money quickly and frivolously.
