Er, no. It should be signed for by the recipient or, at the very least, someone residing at the same property.

You can now deny ever receiving it

He'd knocked, but I was decorating so it took a while to answer. I shouted after him and asked if there was anything else and he said 'no mate, just that recorded delivery'. I hadnt noticed that the jiffy I was holing had a RD sticker on it. Im more concerned that he will do it again when its something that I dont want and wouldnt have signed for...

He doesnt know me from sh*t, and he didnt take it back. He signed my name on the form and rammed it though my letter box so that he didnt have to carry it back with him. Entirely for his beneift and not for mine.

It wasnt valuable, but who knows what it will be that he signs for next time?

Theyve done it to me in the past, they sign for it themselves when they can fit the parcel through the letter box. Happens more than you'd like to think. Thats why if I send something recorded I try and put it in something larger than fits through a letterbox so someone else has to sign for it

Happens to me all the time.

Most amazon "super saver deliveries" just get left outside on the doorstep as well.

I don't mind personally, it saves me getting up extra early to go to the sorting office which is in exactly the opposite direction of where i need to go in the morning

Failing that, he gives my elderly neighbour my parcels

Wierd question, but how do you know what he signed on the form if you only shouted after him?

My posties will do this too, or indirectly deliver to my sister in the next road.
One postie will sign for things, but I actually trust him lol

The bar code had been removed from the sticker: what else could he have done?

My postie does this regularly. I'd rather that than trapse to the Post Office. I suppose if you don't really know your postie then it's a bit irresponsible, but it works for me.

I'm lucky in the fact i have a regular postie, and anything that can't fit through the letterbox or to signed for is left in a hiding place and he pushes a note through the door telling me he has done. It saves us both a load of grief.

If your not happy with what he's done then report him, its an offence to sign for it himself, and on your behalf.

As long as it was undamaged, you would probably do better to forget it. He was doubtless in a hurry and thought he was doing you a favour. If you kick up a fuss, your future deliveries might become more uncertain.

If somebody reported my postie just on a point of technicality, and it prevented him doing it for those customers with whom he had a good working relationship, i'd be mighty pissed off.

Ditto!

I also give my postie a little cash bonus at Christmas to keep him sweet, he's the best postman in the world

The point is if you have an agreement with the postman then fair enough, he was being lazy just posting it through the door without authority. The person who sent the item paid for a service that was not given, recorded delivery is not a secure service, its there to prove that the recipient got the posted item.

Im not bothered about this, but it concerns me. What might he do that he absolutely isnt allowed to do under any circumstances the next time.

I think they do it out of a mutual understanding that the majority of the working population will not be at their residential address during working hours. And people hate having to go to the sorting office to collect undelivered mail; just like they don't like having to drag it back and have it stuck on the shelf for a week, only to end up in being returned to sender.

I think the worst that can happen is the sender is entitled to a refund for not having the recipient's signature.

Something similar happened to a friend. The item was signed for in her name (not her writing) and pushed through an open window. So ensued a farce in which the sender says its been delivered, the PO tracking says its been signed for but she hasn't got the item! It was found behind the couch (near the window) a few days later.
In short it makes a mockery of the whole system.

I'm not a Postman, but do work for the Post Office, so i can not say for sure, but he would get reprimanded for doing that, as i know of a postman that has been. He might do the same next time with a Special delivery item which as you know could be valuable. Its just about keeping standards up.

I'm a postman. The only advice I would give is that if you care about what happens to an item, send it Special Delivery. Recorded items go in the system with everything else, and no one tracks it along its journey. Not really worth the paper it's written on.
