just recently (last monday) bought n set up bluray player
to work with my
43" pioneer XDE plasma
samsung av reciever
samsung bluray
and 7.1 surround.
watched starship troopers & shooter
and the verdict is................................................ ...........................
WOW the colour, brightness, sharpness, detail and overall picture and sound
just cant believe the quality.
starship troopers , in the boot camp the colours are amazing the part when the soldier takes his helmet off and gets a shot in the head, and when there at the out post and the hundreds on bugs come running round the mountain , the detail n space when the space craft break in two ,
at the start of shooter whe there on top of the mountain shooting the convoy and the gunship comes for them the colour and detail of that scene
the soil getting srayed in the air off the gunships bullets awsome

I watched the blu ray of Iron Man over Christmas on my Samsung M87 lcd telly and the picture quality was awesome, I'm probably kidding myself but it did enhance the the whole movie experience compared with DVD. Still missing out on the ultimate sound though, I'm only on 5.1 from a 6 year old Denon amp. I'd also recommend Dark Knight on blu ray.
Picked up Pans Labyrinth and Ghost rider cheap at Woolies before they shut as well although I've not watched them yet. Anybody else get any bargains there at 50% or more off?
Steve.

I wonder, can anyone even hear a difference between 5.1 and 7.1, all other factors remaining the same?
Given how little information comes from the rear speakers anyway, I find it hard to believe that adding two more really makes much difference to the whole movie experience.

LOL, thanks for the critique
From my current blu ray collection ...
Casino Royale - bloody good Bond film, excellent picture and sound.
Blade Runner - everybody already has their own opinion of this one, the improved picture does add a little more atmosphere though.
Hellboy - I love this film, pure comic book fantasy. Blu ray actually spoils it a little bit because you can see the limited production budget, he has a red rubber hand and you can tell!!
Iron Man - another good comic book adaptation, not too heavy a plot and stunning action sequences. As previously mentioned, awesome picture.
Dark Knight - excellent Batman film although it is a little too long and the plot is a little muddled towards the end. Heath Ledger is really good as the Joker, deserving of a posthumous oscar. Great picture and sound.
Still to watch ... Hellboy 2, Pans Labyrinth and Ghost Rider.

Ayup mate, hows it going, PM me !
I bought the Dark Night for Christmas and no Bugger has watched it yet, bough Mamma Mia, funny how something like that can be more terrifying than the Exorcist, we got it on DVD as well so she watched it on that, so 20 quid and the Blu Ray is redundant !

Got "The Shining" on Blu Ray.
Usually with old films on normal DVD, you can tell they aren't recently made. This on Blu Ray is lush and I swear you would think it could have been made last year, despite the fashions.
A worthy purchase and full screen aswell (no pain in the *** 2.4:1 widescreen, miss out half your tv rubbish).
Actually thats something I've noticed with all older (80's & 90's) films released on Blu Ray. They all look like they could have been made recently, whereas on older formats they "look old".

Just watched Hancock, picture was good, audio was nothing to shout about and story was ok. I'll probably watch it again in a few months time.
Also watched Speedracer, terrible story and acting but for sound and visual FX, i aint seen anything to touch it, everything is so vivid and alive! Loved it

We rented The Dark Knight on one of the half-price Blockbuster tickets the other day, projected in 1080p to 8 feet wide it was just stunning. There is a night scene in Hong Kong from the air where there is a real feeling of vertigo it is so clear. Another beautiful shot is in the huge room with the ceiling panels, it is just so clear and impressive.
I also love Wall-E, especially the scenes on Earth at the beginning. The dead city and the lighting are fantastic, almost hyper-real. I also love the way selective focus and zooming is used in a very film-like way, the extra sharpness makes the file 'pop' into life.
I had a look at Iron Man and thought it was too annoying for me, for some reason in Batman Begins or TDK the stunts are exciting and somewhat believeable, while in Iron Man things happen that just made me groan and think it was stupid...
On my setup upscaled DVD looks very soft in comparison, with nowhere near the clarity and depth of colour. Still pretty good, but not like the titles above...

Watched Wall E on Sunday. One of the better films I have for being able to notice the HD.
Full Metal Jacket is probably the least noticeable.
We don't have that many.
Full Metal Jacket
Wall E
Dark Knight
40 Days of Night
Transformers (Most noticeable HD quality)
One problem I have is that I can't get my PS3 to output Dolby Digital over the HDMI port.

Not many here yet either:
Band of Brothers - Had DVD, but BD much, much better.
Dark Knight - Fantastic
Transformers - Don't think has been mentioned yet, but best BD I have I think.
Indiana Jones/Crystal Skull - Excellent
U-571 - Totally different from DVD, especially lighting of scenes, and sounds under depth charges is amazing
Blade Runner (DC) - Better than DVD in picture but not much and sound is average.
The Bank Job - Good film, lovely lighting.
I'm in the half/half world of having lots of DVDs that upscale nicely on my system, but also look to new releases for BD over DVD is I *think* it might be worth it.
Got to get Black Hawk Down and Matrix on BD, but also looking to change from DVD to BD for Ronin, Leon and Behind Enemy Lines.
