I think a half way house is more likely. From what I know council flats are awarded on a points basis and from what you say your friend should have a few points.
By no means will it be quick and easy.

lots of repossessions, and also test cases up held meaning an amnesty on throwing out 'foreigners'
-sounds like they qualify quite resonably otherwise ..

One of the birds where I work has a council flat, and she must have a pretty decent disposible income as a result! It's a city centre flat, so she doesn't need to run a car and can walk to work. Shes single with no kids. Her salary is not bad, so assuming it's either low rent or rent free she must have plenty left over each month - the sort of disposible income to rival those on significantly higher salaries who have to pay rent/mortgage and run a car!

They may only get a hostel and be split up, but if they beg and pleasd enough then they may get a flat but I imagine they wouldn't be able to turn down any offers.

What GC8 said. Council housing/Housing association is not, like, given away free of charge. You still have to pay rent.

In relation to the initial post, contacting the local council would probably be a start

My friend pays £50 pw for his council house if that is useful info. I think that is circa the going rate here up in the North East. No idea how that may change in your area.

As for getting one, its simply supply and demand. The more houses your authority has, and the lower the demand, the more chance you have of getting one. In some areas you could sometimes even choose where you wanted to live!

However, in the current climate I can only imagine that demand has unfortunately risen. I wish your friend well, as few desire to live in a council house....

Unless they are married I think they 'could' be temporarily separated. Not in every case, it just depends on their emergency accommodation situation (prob not good).
Another bonus for them is most council's now get people who are on their list, on housing association waiting lists too...

I am pretty sure they are obliged to house them though (unless they have made themselves intentionally homeless/evicted etc)

I'm guessing council flats are sometimes rent free? If someone isn't earning they can't charge rent? Not sure how this stuff works though to be honest!

If they were 'none white's' I very much doubt we would be having this conversation. Unfortunately that's the way this country has gone. These place's are scared of being accused for being racist.

Hope it all works out for them though

Did you read the original post? Nothing is rent free and a single woman earning the minimum wage wont qualify for any benefit in this respect.

Depends where and who. It's a lottery from what I understand.

I believe though if you were a Somali human rights refugee with several children you would take precedence over an indigenous white (or any other colour) local on the grounds that your housing needs would be greater.

That was the consensus on a Radio 4 programme I listened to today.
