Poker question(s)....
Hi all
I'm enoying learning my way with Poker (Texas Hold 'em) at the moment, but had a couple of questions that I wanted to ask. I thought I'd ask my learned colleagues here on SN as its often the font of all knowledge.
Thanks in advance

- I'd like to buy some decent cards (or even a set-up package) for Poker nights in. Can someone please recommend either a good supplier, or directly link me to the merchandise?
- The deck-holders for multi-decks of cards. How do they work? Am I missing the point, or do they run the risk of two cards of the same suit sometimes being in play at the same time?
Thanks in advance

Personally I'd not go nuts on spending a lot of money on cards because most decks get pretty wrecked quite quickly. It's better to have several packs and completely change the deck when one is ruined. You can throw the old one out, relegate it it snap and patience, or give it to the kids
I personally like cards with a Cambric finish as they have a nice floaty feel to them. Official Belagio decks by Bee are made this way and can be had on ebay for £3-4 delivered. If you are careful and not using them a lot a few packs of those should last you a while.
As for deck-holders or shufflers I'd personally not bother. Take turns dealing and you'll all quickly pick up sufficient skills to randomize the cards quickly.
One thing that I'd say makes a big difference to the enjoyment of home poker games is some proper chips as opposed to matches or cheap plastic ones. There are version gift sets available (got a birthday coming up, if so drop hints) that include nice heavy chips that are much more satisfying to handle.

Sign up to the big websites and they send you packs of cards. Ive got some PartyPoker and FullTilt cards downstairs which have lasted a while although I dont host many games myself.
A good way of learning and playing without spending is LPPL - Live Pub Poker League - Home - Texas Holdem Poker in your local pub - GB Pub Poker League
Play for free and you will be playing against, good, bad and every other type of player. Make the areas and nationals and you'll find out how good you are. Better than going to places like Dusk til Dawn and being bullied because you dont have enough chips and cant afford the gamble.
IMO anyway

I got a WPT (World Poker Tour) 500 chip set with 2 sets of cards for £40 from eBay about a year ago. Came in a nice wooden box too These are 11.5g and the cards are decent enough too

you should get yourself down to the casino on poker night its only a tenner to enter. you play with about 50-100 people in a knock out. plus you win prize money if you win. its a good night out and gets you to learn fast.

What oadamo doesn't tell you is that most of the local casino £10 games are not freezouts and have a rebuy period. Because there are many bored old ladies and taxi drivers there gambling it up you can't turn up to a £10 rebuy with £10 and expect to be there long unless you get very lucky. I'd budget £40-50 for any £10 rebuy. There are freezout tourneys though so keep an eye out for them and playing live in the casino can be fun.

Dusk Til Dawn is a good night and often have a freezeout tournament but you are looking at £50 and £75 buy ins. Very good night out with serious play if all you are interested in is Texas Holdem.
Wouldnt recommend it to any beginners.

Grosvenor Casinos are cheaper than that. £50 and £75 buy-in is a lot of money to spend on a poker games if your new to it. I've been playing for fun mainly but I went to a casino to see how far I could get, I managed to last until the second to last table, about 25th out of 60 and didn't think I did too bad and that was in a £12.50 - £10 rebuy or chip stack.
There's no need to spend that amount of money on a poker game, especially at amateur level, that sort of money only attracts the pros who play every night so you'd be out in the first table.

I did say I wouldnt suggest it to beginners. Just commenting on it being a good venue for Poker as its not a Casino, its a dedicated Poker hall.
I like to think I have a very consistent game, hate online poker though. Win alot more than I lose but I find it screws up my real time game.

A rebuy tournament is where you can rebuy the original amount of chips for the original price as many times as you want when you bust out for a certain period of time. Usually an hour or two after which time it becomes a normal freezout tournament and is played until there is a winner or a deal is done.
