Default disney holiday

want to take the family to disneyworld, (florida) next year and have been saving for it for the last 10 months so any credit cruch, hold on to your money is not going to happen. there are 3 of us, including my little girl who is 10 so i think a good age for it.

i have a few questions though and any other suggestions or tips would be great. i have been into a couple of travel agents who suggest different packages but just wondered what people on here, experiences were.

she has her sats in may so was looking at the end of may, is this a good time to go, whats the weather like that time of year?

stay in disney or kissimee or on international drive? (what are the advantages/disadvatages of these)?

as we have saved for a long while (and another 5/6 months to go) we have looked at prices from £4000 to £6000 for everything, (inc spending money and park entry), is this enough/too much as we don t want to miss anything but like wise book/do stuff that is rubbish?

who are the best people to book through? travel agents, virgin direct, ba direct?

any help or suggestions would be really great, thanks in advance.

ian.

i-drive is central but hectic with kids, Kissimee is far more residential and more tourist friendly, Disney is just over priced.
Also consider Davenport, 15 mins from Disney and all the other places, nice and quiet, and I stay there each year.

Tickets are best bought through a specialist usually, waiting for the exchange rate in your favour is a must right not.

Depends how you are going to book each part of your holiday really, to decide who to go through.

Most operators offer everything from flights to car hire, to tickets, but its usually all cheaper bought seperately. (dont believe the hype)

Flights with Thomson are fine from experience, and usually a bit cheaper than BA and Virgin.

Car rental Car Rentals from Budget and Car Hire - Car for Rental - Holiday Car Hire | Dollar Rental Cars are both good to rent from.

Other things to consider are the airport to fly to. Orlando International is nearest, but Sanford international is much smaller and copes better with the rush of passengers, and is not much further away.

Other bits of advice would be....

Get a house not a hotel (private pool rocks)
Book tickets in the UK for attractions, although if the ER rebalances itself buy them locally in the US.
Use the US car rental sites and keep getting quotes, the rates fluctuate like no ones business, and the reservation is NOT pre pay, you pay when you have finished the rental. So if the prices are low now, just book it to fix the price
Get an SUV not a car, thats just my preference. Eats the miles in comfort and able to see past the cars ahead on the roads.

Budget is really gonna depend on how wise you are with your money. Simple things like buying water spray fan things (that the kids love) and towels etc BEFORE going in the parks, from vendors and local shops will save a fortune.

Dennys, Checkers, Popeyes, Wendy's etc are all a must lol

I will think up some other less than useful advice shortly

I would second what Snaz says, get a Villa pay the extra and you will love it!!!!

For tickets we have always used DisneyWorld - unofficial guide to your disneyworld vacation, resorts, parks, rides and dining and always found then resonable but buy from the USA site and they will ship then by airmail to you, if you use the UK site last time I checked they were abotu £200 more for the package {different tickets} we wanted.

It all depends on what you want to do.

The people are really friendly and love the British.

Get your currancy when you feel the rate is right, as you have plenty of time you don't have to panic...{I may retract that at a later date lol}

We usually fly with Virgin who are amazing, not used BA {ever strangely, no reason}

Have flown with Thomson before they changed the planes and god it was a nightmare but I believe they are better now.

You could try all the usual online agents like virgin and another one we used once {it was the Thomson flight} Holidays to Florida / Flights and Hotels in Florida but I am not sure if they do Villas....

Eitherway you will love it!

Paul, we are the other way round, been with a lot of the main carriers apart from the big 2
Airtours was lovely (Thomson bought them out I think)
Monarch... Dont EVER go long haul with them lol
Thomson were ok too
And I think the other was First Choice
All but Monarch were more than managable

Depends what you want in flight I guess. But all have extended their leg room now, and I have had no trouble with the seating, even when I was 20 stone

We found our house/villa through Daltons Holidays, and rent directly from the owner, so works out quite cheap (ish)
£375 a week for a 3 bedroom with ensuite, double garage, private heated pool etc.

Like I say car rental is my favorite part, seeing what cars I can get each year, and now the other half drives, we can waste more money on cars and gas
SatNav (GPS) Take your own or rent one, but for less stress and more exploring its a must.

Thas the beauty of going to Florida everyone has a differnet take on it none being wrong

Also not sure where you plan on flying from, we usually goto Manchester and stay overnight with parking included as it works out cheaper than driving up an an unearthy hour and parking in the airport carpark for an extortionate amount.

If you live miles away book a nice hotel that does the transfers to the airport, park up relax and enjoy it a day earlier failing that if you live next to the airport your already sorted lol.

Ian,

Couple of tips, we've been for 3 weeks in '07, and 24 days in July/August '08.

#1. 3 weeks is better than 2, and isn't that much more expensive. For 4-5k you'll do 21 days easy.

#2. Get a villa.

#3. Look here for advice, these guys are Disney experts, very friendly and will help with almost anything Disney related. Welcome to theDIBB

#4. Go DIY. BA and Virgin flights at the end of May will be cica £1300 for all 3 of you.

#5. Google "Love Bugs" End of May is pretty much the middle of the first season ( or plague as my wife calls it! ) Not sure if your daughter likes creepy crawlies but it can freak kids out.

#6. Get a Dollar Express card, if you book with Dollar ( cheapest way to do this is with a UK company like USA Car Hire online with usrentacar.co.uk - car rentaland hire in USA United States of America, Florida, Orlando, California and New York

The Dollar Express card allows you to jump the queue at the car hire desk
( can be anyting upto a 90 min wait ) and USrentacar will make sure you've got all your insurances. We had a Jeep Commander for 24 days for £560 all in.

#7. Championsgate is a great area to stay in, if you go for a villa, which I wopuld strongly advise. Shops, restraunts, and 15 mins up I4 to Disney. 25 mins from Orlando Airport. I wouldn't stay anywhere else.

#8. We do 2 weeks in Orlando, then a week on the Gulf coast. Anna Maria Island is our favourite destination, 75 mins from Orlando, white powder sand, desrted beaches, palm trees, warm blue ocean, great food. Lots of chill out time and if you need another park, Busch Gardens is 1 hour away.

Ian,

Couple of tips, we've been for 3 weeks in '07, and 24 days in July/August '08, so I like to think of myself as an semi-experienced Florida veteran.

#1. 3 weeks is better than 2, and isn't that much more expensive. For 4-5k you'll do 21 days easy.

#2. Get a villa. I wouldn't stay on I-Drive. It's very commercial now, traffic can be horrendous at times. We only go there for Pirates Cove adventure golf.

#3. Please, please please, look here for advice, these guys are Disney experts, very friendly and will help with anything Disney related. Welcome to theDIBB

#4. Go DIY. It's much cheaper than package IMHO and you get what you want.

End of May is aslo the Memorial Bank Holiday and the parks can be very very busy.

#6. Get a Dollar Express card, from the Dollar website, it's free. If you book with Dollar ( cheapest way to do this is with a UK company like USA Car Hire online with usrentacar.co.uk - car rentaland hire in USA United States of America, Florida, Orlando, California and New York

The Dollar Express card allows you to jump the queue at the car hire desk
( can be anyting upto a 90 min wait ) and USrentacar will make sure you've got all your insurances. We had a Jeep Commander for 24 days for £560 all in.

#7. Championsgate is a great area to stay in, if you go for a villa, which I would strongly advise. Shops, restraunts all local, quiet and it's a genuine 15 mins up I4 to Disney and 25 mins from Orlando Airport down the 417.
I wouldn't stay anywhere else.

#8. Consider a week relaxing after 2 weeks in the parks. We do 2 weeks in Orlando, then a week on the Gulf coast. Anna Maria Island is our favourite destination, 75 mins from Orlando, white powder sand, deserted beaches, palm trees, warm blue ocean, great food. Lots of chill out time and if you need another park, Busch Gardens is 1 hour away.

#9. Park tickets I get from these guys Disney tickets discount, free shipping from Undercover Tourist, Orlando, Florida

Good prices, and the service is second to none. We left our tickets behind in July, I emailed them at 20:00 Florida time, had a reply back 10 minutes later telling me it was all sorted, just go to Disney in the morning and pickup the new tickets. I went from blind panic to asleep in 20 minutes flat.

If you decide on a villa, I can PM you the last 2 that we've used. If you fancy ANna Maria Island, I'll PM you the last 2 palces we stayed.

Any other questions, feel free to ask. I'm currently planning 2010!

really appreciate the advice, as mentioned earlier it seems like everyone has their own take on what to do.

looking at packages, staying in disney does not appear a huge amount more money, or am i just searching in the wrong places.

what about parks and passes which ones are the best, aquqtica has been mentioned, aswell as the main disney passes?

how soon should we book, does it make a difference booking 6 months in advance or do people think it will get any cheaper?

thanks again and i am sure i will have more questions soon.

lol FM, im planning 09 at the mo, 10 will be getting sorted in the coming months lol.

Honestly unless you will spend the whole time at Disney, I would really recommend getting a house mate. Its so much nicer to have the ultimate privacy.
As FM said, ChampionsGate is very nice too

Preference of parks is very much a personal thing.

Universal Studios and IOA are both worth doing (express passes are a must lol)
Both Disney water parks were fun too, excellent for relaxing and going wild in.

Wet and Wild I am still yet to go to, Aquatica sells out regularly and on a daily basis, first come first served, so get there early, but is meant to be spectacular

Busch Gardens, another super day out, but being over on the west side of Florida, allow time to get there.

Sea World, lovely day out, can get a bit tiresome though, you have to plan your visit around the shows really, as there are only a few other "attractions" there. But all the shows are cool, Shamu Rocks is the one to catch (evening Shamu/Dolphin show. And Clyde and Seymour too (watch for the mime)

Passes, you can get 14 day passes for Busch, W&W, Universal (both), Seaworld and Aquatica (I think) as an all in 1 ticket. Usually a couple of hundred quid per person.

Allow for $10 parking daily, and about $40 per person for express passes for each park.

When to book, thats anyones guess right now to be fair, air prices are low at the mo, could drop lower, or could rocket.
If you book a package you will secure the price and can pay it off monthly with a lot of operators.

Everyone loves Florida for different reasons.
Mine are..
Open space, choice, peace and quiet, relaxation, and hassle free driving.
Oh and simplicty lol

Thats all aside to the mad fun at the parks, the shopping and all the other crazy stuff you get to do.

Airboat ride I would recommend any day.
Kennedy is fantastic if you like that sort of thing
Daytona Beach, and raceway.... great stuff.....

Do not go when the kids are on holiday!!!

I went 3 years ago in July, it was a hell hole, full of whining snivelling kids, queues for everything, really bloody hot, Magical Kingdom my ****!
Yank, Canadian and European kids were all on holiday and the bloody place was at breaking point.

Been back since in June and it was a totally different experience and very enjoyable.

I have to confess we went out there late this year, i.e during the holidays and its a very different place. Not as bad as I imagined to be honest, but not as relaxing.
Seeing as you have a lil one though I guess you might be limited. Dont panic though, its not THAT bad, just not AS good lol

4th of July for us out there every year now

we went to florida last march, dont go to a disney hotel GET A VILLA AND HIRE CAR.Problably cost the same but with a villa you get a pool of your own and privacy.
you will love it,best holiday ive had in my life.were saving for next year.one thing i will say is to not go mad on theme park tickets,we got loads of tickets but didnt use them all.each park is massive and takes a few days each to see everything and its knackering so a day or two chilling by the pool is essential as is the shopping over there.
i cant wait to go back.

Dunno about the allowing 2 days for some of the parks though. With express passes you can be on everything worth while in a few hours.
But it is worth getting on EVERYTHING at least once though I agree

Evenings by the pool are priceless, and the perfect way to wind down

Mall Millenia (sp) dont let the wife there !! lol

Snaz,

Have you done this new form? I have only just received the MSE email which mentions and it is worth the OP looking into it too.

You must apply for an ESTA online to enter the USA after 12 Jan 2009 - MoneySavingExpert.com Forums

I shall be doing ours when I get a mo.

ESTA replaces the old green Visa Waiver Form and can be done any time before departure, but no later than 72 hours IIRC.

Aaaah splendid, thanks chaps I shall save that as a reminder for myself. Is it meant to speed things up at immigration ? Prior notice, like they are doing with all their customs paperwork too?

It wont help at immigration Snazy, but will greatly aid the US security authorities in determining whether or not your a terrorist.

Nah, it means you never get on the plane, the anti-terrorist squad kick your door in, your neighbours get interviewed on TV and tell the nation what a "normal" guy you are, you loose your job, wife and kids. Your parents disown you. Your computer is forensically analysed and your found to be a paedophile, as well as a Jehadist.

Then, after a trial, and subsequent aquittal, you're free to go back to the ruin that is your life.

Allegedly.

WTF has this got to do with Disney?

thanks for all the replies.

i think we have decided to stay in kissimee, looked at the websites suggested, which places have people stayed at there, that they would recommend (think we are looking at an appartment as we do not mind sharing a pool and they looked a bit cheaper than villas and we never spend that much time in the 'room' and gives us more spending money.

has anyone used holidaygenie.com

found their website on a kind of price runner website and they had some really good prices etc.

sent them an e mail which they replied to within 24hrs and said they would call me if i wanted or i could ring them. the prices were really good, but just wondered if anyone had experience of them as i am always a bit worried about using this sort of firm (horror stories on watchdog etc)

thanks
