Default Who are the good retailers out there?

Who will ride out the recession.

1. Amazon, developed a great name and reputation for service. By far my number one online retailer. Books, CD's, DVD's, small electrical stuff, etc.
2. House of Fraser, i still get a lot of clothes there, good for brands. Having said that i dont always think they use the space well. The one in Hull has a whole top floor just used to store stuff, its 70% empty.
3. HMV, not everyone wants to do everything online, and they have good dvd offers. plus, they have a good in store sound (Tannoys i think)
4. B&Q pretty much first choice for diy stuff, just down to the sheer size of the stores. If you run out of materials halfway through a job, you only want to go to one place.
5. TK Maxx, where else can you buy a Ted Baker shirt for £15.

I personally believe that over the next decade the only retailer to survive will be Tesco, the rest of us will be put to work in telephone call centers. The UK will be the new New Delhi.

This is my own opinion because I have run out of beer and am waiting for the creases to fall out of my shirt before I can go back down the pub.

John Lewis - A good selection of quality items - good for electricals too with the 5 year warranty.

House of Fraser - As above, this place is great for branded clothing - always seem to have a good selection of stuff as well. Always lots of nice suits. Whereas JL is best for electricals, H of F is best for clothes imo.

Halfords - I know a lot wont agree, but where can you find so much car stuff in one place? Went in recently after buying an older car, and they have the whole range of Auto Glym stuff, all types of oil, wiper blades for everything, bulbs for everything - just makes things so easy.

Not quite right: all retailing will be by Amazon or Tesco: Amazon get the on-line stuff, Tesco get the walk-in trade.

Halfords need to wake up and free up the space that contains all the sill camping stuff and bits nobody buys. then add some good staff without acne.

then and only then will it survive. people will get more savvy when it comes to buying basic car spares etc. my local car shop is far superior and the guys know much more than any halfords staff will ever bother to learn. Cheaper by far to.

Amazon are cute, but they don't have the Tesco infrastructure of massive local shops, free parking, home delivery service... and buy on-line.

Anything Amazon can do... have you seen the range of stuff Tesco Direct is selling these days? And the prices

It's a depressing thought, mind

Richard.

Of course this is said in jest. Do you remember when everyone thought the city centre was dead, now they have all been regenerated. One day Tesco will get too big, and people will favour the smaller retailer again.

Most high streets will just be full of clothes shops ( and theme pubs ) - reason being the markup on clothes is huge compared to most other retail sectors, which is why they can easily do 50% off sales, and still be making decent money on the stuff, plus lots of people ( women ) prefer to buy clothes in person and try them on rather than buying online.

B&Q and Focus / Do It All should be OK as with people having less money, they will go back to DIY rather than paying someone to do work on the house, and with all the Poles going home, they are just left with the sullen British builders.

Disagree more and more people are getting into camping. So it make snese for them to sell the stuff after all it pretty much goes hand in hand with car stuff. As you need a car to drive to most camp sites

Sorry I was hammered when writing this last night.

I'm reserving judgement yet, however I can see how Tesco's have strangled the smaller shops with their buying power and budgets. I would love to see it different, and have decent bakers, butchers etc all coming back.

The only issue with this is as a nation we are lazy, we want to go and get everything in one place rather than walk from shop to shop.

Its a bit of a sweeping generalisation but, its not far off the mark.

John Lewis set the standards for Customer Service.

Amazon, Play.com + EBuyer for ease of shopping.

Tescos for amazing value - on everything.

Amazon have their fingers in more than just online retailing. Look up their AWS offerings like S3 and assorted cloud computing services.

No vote for HMV here - I bought a poorly labelled iPod case as a Christmas present and found it didn't fit so took it back today. They would only refund onto a gift card

Having a potentially worthless zavvi gift card in my wallet has put me off gift cards, so that got spent pretty quick.

They are closing the Swindon store soon (only opened a couple of years ago). Rumour is that they are going to replace it with a cheapo "outlet" store instead.
