Automatic Watches?
Recently got myself an automatic TAG watch, well the g/f got it for me actually for my 30th b.day but anyway....
For those of you out there with automatic watches, how long do they keep ticking for when you haven't worn them for a while?
I noticed mine lost time a few days after we picked it up but just put this down to it sitting in the shop for some time and i had only had it on for a few days, off and on.
Then a week or so later I noticed while at work it had lost an hour or so (can't quite remember but this may have been on a monday when I hadn't had it on over the weekend?).
Yesterday I then noticed it had completely stopped. I had it on Monday, Tuesday, doing dirty job at work on Wednesday so didn't put it on then Thursday noticed it had stopped. Is this normal or is my watch fecked?
When I picked the watch up I asked the lady in Goldsmiths if I would need a winder but she said it should be ok for a week or two if fully "charged", but in the TAG book I have just noticed it should run up to 42 hours fully charged?
How do you all find yours?

I have an Oris and a Maurice Lacroix automatics and they both run on for about 36-48 hours when left unworn. They both keep good time though, maybe going out by a minute a month or so in continuous use. If yours is loosing an hour in less than a week I'd say it needs calibrating. There should be an adjustment (balance ****) on the movement that any decent jeweller will set for you. It'll be a bit trial and error to get it anywhere near bang on, but I'd have thought if it's so far out then the retailer whom sold you it would be obliged to correct it.

I just look at the sun, I wouldn't splash out on a sundial! Why have a Casio when you can draw a picture of a watch on your wrist with a biro
Seriously, I also have a Rolex and the only time I've had it off for more than a few mins it stopped around 36 hours later.

I have 2 Omega watches, when I am wearing one I put the other in one of these;
ka003-b Single Automatic Mechanical Watch Winder Black on eBay, also Winders, Watch Accessories, Watches, Jewelry Watches (end time 03-Jan-09 04:35:48 GMT)
They ship from Hong Kong, don't be put off by the cheap price (a watch winder in the UK is fuddy duddy glossy wood affair, costing £200 and up), these jobbies are quietish, and they do a solid job for £30, highly recommended.

Most automatics will run for 30-40 hours without being worn, then its just a case of setting the correct time and winding backup up before wearing it.
It shouldn't lose that much time while being worn though. It will take a while for the mechanism to settle, especially if its been in the dealers for a while, but it should never be that far out.
My Sinn is 9 months old and accurate to +/- a second a day.
Get it changed/checked if it continues to run like that.

What TAG model is it ?
Panerai have a 7 day escapement, thats about the top end of the scale.
I would imagine your Tag afTer a full charge to no movement will be 24/36 hours with no chronos engaged... with chronos engaged you can half it.
To fully charge your watch without a watch winder box, simply manual wind the crown 30/35 full revolutions, and wear it.
Never try to auto wind a dead automatic as it will not fully charge, and you will look silly doing it.

It's the Aquaracer Chronograph - TAG Heuer Aquaracer Man Automatic Chronograph > CAF2110.BA0809 > Swiss Dive Watch - Man Luxury Watch
The other week when I noticed it was an hour behind, this could well have been on a monday so in theory I probably didn't wear it over the weekend and possibly this was the cause for it losing time?
So, should they lose time while they are not used & "de-charge" or should they keep time then just stop?
My girl friend works in town so popped into Goldsmiths this lunch time to ask about this, basically they said bring it in and they can put it on something/check it, somehow???
So see what they say tomorrow.

They should stay accurate until they stop or near as dam it to when they stop.
And they should run indefonately whilst on your wrist, even if you think you dont move much in your sleep, you do.
Your model will not overwind whilst on your wrist or during a manual wind, the main spring will release at a certain tension.
Glossary - Mainspring - Auto Spring
I suggest you give it a full charge (manual wind) then dont take it off all weekend, if it gains / loses or stops you can then take it back knowing it is faulty.

I didnt, but I do now.
The 7S26 was introduced in the mid-90s and it is used in all of Seiko's ENTRY LEVEL mechanical watches, including the popular Seiko 5 and Automatic Diver's lines. It is widely regarded as a very robust and reliable movement, found in watches touted as "bullet-proof" by their owners.
The ability to withstand abuse is a desirable feature for a mechanical watch. The 7S26 uses Seiko's patented Diashock shock protection on the balance pivots, has a soft, PLASTIC ring closely integrated with the movement and a relatively low mass rotor, that is unlikely to bend or break the rotor shaft even with very severe shocks. The plastic spacer ring provides a great deal of additional shock resistance and is a more economical solution than a metal spacer ring, as well.
The dial side of the 7S26 movement contains a day and date mechanism with quick-set features that is largely MADE OF PLASTIC.
One of the special features of Seiko automatics is the MAGIC LEVER WINDING system. It has only four parts and this simplicity of design adds to its robustness while maintaining a high level of functionality.

There are a number of different grades of 7S26, with '5' watches using a lower grade (that said I have a '5' which keeps just as good time as the high grade dives). Its non-hacking too. The article that youve quoted seems to be quite biased and anti-Seiko. In my experience many, many serious watch collectors regard Seiko highly (as one of if not the best manufacturer in the world, all things considered) and wear their watches on a day-to-day basis.

My GMT lasts a couple or three days, but time wise it gains around 15 to 20 seconds a month, my colleagues TG loses 5 to 10 minutes a day.........
My Omega Seamaster, battery, is within a few seconds a year.

Simon I too like Seiko watches, and my post was not meant to offend or be-little.
My Seiko Atlas was cheap, yet it is as reliable as others in my collection with an extra "0" on the price tag.
I think Santa is bringing me a Seiko MONSTER this year, if Im good.

Yes black, if she was listening to me properly inbetween EastEnders.
As you may well imagine as soon as I mention watches in my house she usually turns off, or falls asleep....
Ed's Corner: Seiko Monster Review SKX779
Much cheapness, for a nice chunky watch.

Was hoping to stretch to a Prince Monster, but not at the Moment as work is looking gloomy, and I dont fancy selling anything else to make way for it.
I think the watch your talking about has a special graphite coating, Ive not seen one though.
