RCD or circuit breaker?
If its the latter, its going to be a pretty big fault current...your not running a few electric heaters by any chance? As two of them in combination with other household stuff would push the limits of the circuit. If its not that, must be a fault somewhwre, but I would have thought that whatever was cuasing it would have caught fire by now!
If its the RCD, they can be tetchy; leaky kettle or iron. Washing machine, dishwasher, fridge/freezer etc can trip a RCD for no obvious reason (although usually damp/water ingress)

On a similar note, the bulb in my kitchen blows (explodes actually) on a semi-regular basis. Always just when i turn the switch on, never while it's actually "on". It's a new-ish house so the wiring isn't under suspicion. Any ideas anyone?

We had a similar problem few years back - was a faulty Iron that was causing the trip.
Could also be dishwasher etc - maybe something else you turn on before going to bed etc (Washing machine etc).
Another thing to check is any automatic light switches etc that are plugged in - We've got a few and when they come on the power can be surged etc.

Nope, nothing like that, Geoff. I guess there's condensation in the kitchen - maybe that has some sort of cumulative effect? My own theory is that i'm using a 100w gas-guzzling bulb, and the shade is not suspended from a cord of any sort, so it's close to the ceiling. Could it be that the bulb is working at higher temperatures than is safe, weakening it and leaving is susceptible to shattering when the electricity is turned on after it has cooled?

Does that make me a pessimist or an optimist
ps _ did tell the wife the iron was still good for ironing once I'd emptied it - but she was having none of it - replaced iron too

Had a similar problem and it turned out to be mice nesting in the back of a deep freeze in the garage and chewing wires when they were bored

(note, with GU10 or MR16 bilbs, moisture gets trapped between the glass filter (front) and the actual bulb glass envelope behind it).

Moisture/condensation on the glass. Causes micro-fractures, so the bulb goes pop in a big way. Happens alot with halogens; especially in kitchens and bathrooms.

It is true that the more times one of those breakers trips, the easier it is to trip it again. We had a similar problem with ours tripping when it shouldn't have and the only answer was to buy a replacement breaker- The new one is fine but they are expensive I'm afraid.
