Default How do I know if my tyres are legal ?

Bald around the edges .. I appear to have been driving a little quick .. and the edges of all my tyres are not almost bald .. the middle of the tyres is still very deep ...

How do I know if they are legal ? I cant afford to buy a new set at this time of year !

let a little air out of each one so they sit a little more flat to the ground so they start to wear a little more evenly.

The centre 75% is the important bit, so you've got 12.5% of the surface from each edge to play with

Does that not reduce the handling ? (question, not sly comments)

I had exactly what you describe on my MY05, the amount of silly people that told me at work my tyres where illegal and then when I challenged them as to what the legal limit was - they soon shut up !

As I was swapping the car in I got a friendly tyre fitter to mount them the other way around (worn edge on the inside)

Some info here :- UK tyre law legal requirements for manufacturer & motorist - fitment, condition, tread depth & wear

"A minimum of 1.6mm in a continuous band throughout the central three-quarters of the tread width, throughout the whole of the circumference"

"The penalties for having illegal tyres are currently up to a £2500 fine and 3 penalty points PER TYRE!"

Under-inflated tyres wear faster on the edges.

Check your pressures are ok - as I say, soft tyres wear faster on the edges.

Bald edges are ok as long as the central 3/4 is fine - Assuming the edges are not worn through to the reinforcing bands.

Yes you can! Just have them re-fitted on the other side.

Overinflated tyres wear out the middle sections, not the edges.

WRONG ! The proper legal definition is...

'1.6mm across the centre 3/4 breadth of the tire and around the entire circumference, with visible tread to the outer edges'

This may explain the unusual wear....

Yes - exactly what I did on my directional tyres !! My edges where not bald so perfectly legal - just worn (a lot more than the rest).

Its most likely the tracking which has caused it !

Youll only be prosecuted for one tyre, even if all four are equally illegal. You cant have any bald patches though, the centre 75% must have 1.6mm of tread but there needs to be visible tread over the remaining 25%.

A worn centre doesnt always equate to too high a pressure either. If the tyre pressure is too low then centrifugal force will force the tread centre out causing premature wear. The point being that people repeat what theyve heard too often without ever thinking about it.....

Tire pressures are relative to the weight of the car. It's why they don't print a recommended pressure on the sidewall, as a tire made for a vehicle such as a 2 1/2 tonne Bentley may be used by someone on an Ariel Atom, and I am sure you can appreciate that they will both deform the tire through weight somewhat differently. Car manufacturers will quote their recommendations for each vehicle, beyond that it is the owners choice for for preferred handling characteristics.

I'm amazed no-one has mentioned getting your tracking done.

I wasted 2 expensive tyres due to my tracking being way out.

4 wheel tracking cost £65. Half the cost of one of the tyres ruined.

Personally I'd never muck about with tyre pressures to compensate for an uneven wear pattern. Incorrectly inflated tryes affects braking and handling, let alone grip etc.
