hmmm, seems floored to me.
If someone has been in the country and managed to get away with it for so long, where is the incentive for them to stick up their hand? If the admit to being here, then they start to pay taxes and jump through a fair few hoops as you mentioned in the article.
Not to mention that they have to be a long term illegal immigrant......and just how are they going to prove that? passport employment records?

Flawed. I should say so, go and employ a few more police/immigration officials and cut un-employment by 700,000 !
As a single white male I'd get diddly-squat from the authorities, but a family of immigrants get a house worth £1.2 M to ruin.

Not such a bad idea really.
A lot of illegal immigrants are already paying taxes using false documents with a bank account under someone elses name. It would reduce this type of fraud for starters.
For those who say that the illegal immigrants that aren't paying taxes won't want to have to pay are probably wrong. A lot of illegal immigrants work for a couple of pounds an hour, have no protection from exploitation etc. I'm sure that most would be happy to have minimum wages and pay taxes.
Lets not forget a lot of the illegal immigrants here aren't criminals, they just want a better life than they'd get at home.

.....but Im far less concerned about these people than the 'asylum seekers' that my city is over run with; who have no intention of doing anything more taxing than filling in benefit forms (and hanging around in gangs menacing people in the city centre, assorted crime and spreading disease)...
