Some idiot stole my bike
"Stolen from Brookwood Station on Friday 14th November 2008. GT Zaskar. (Reward offered for information leading to safe recovery.)
Description:
Series 1 Frameset identifiable by: Very chunky hand welded in U.S. (unlike the later ones made in Tiwan), and NO detachable gear hanger at rear dropout - This is very rare.
Girvin Flexstem - 140mm reach in Yellow
Rockshox MAG20 front fork
Shimano XT Front/Rear Mechs
XT combined underbar Shifters/Brake levers.
XT Hubs with Mavic rims.
Ringle 'Holey' old skool wheel skewers - Polished Aluminium finish.
Shimano U11 retro rear brake - very distinctive and rare.
Yellow Yeti Handlebar grips.
Pedals - old school Tioga with remains of plastic toe clips still attached.
Very 'stickered up' frame with additional Onza, Shimano, Girvin and other decals attached."
Pissed off is not the word... I had this bike built for me new back around 1992 and I've owned it ever since.... until last Friday...
I know it's pretty retro and old skool, so why would somebody target and old wreck like that??

Unlucky mate, I feel for you.
Had my bike nicked a few years back from the back of my Mk4 Golf. They caused 1800 quids worth of damage to nick a £400 quid bike. The car was a right mess.
Would be nice if you got what was rightfully yours back, but the chances are pretty slim

Bolt cropper job. They cut straight through the cable. Apparently the station keeps CCTV tapes for a month. So if I report it the Police will examine the footage (apparently).
Anyway - I've ordered a new machine (another GT but a lot lower spec) for commuting and bought a much beefier lock. - There's no way I'm going to leave my Specialized FSR there during the day with any kind of lock on it!!
I'm going to be scanning Ebay as well - those framesets are quite sought after by the retro heads, so I'm told. It could well come up when they find out how old and knackered most of the components are... And those Ringle skewers - they go for good money too. God knows why I left them on the bike, I should have removed them ages ago...

I got a great guided ride round Tunnel Hill recently - lots of lovely singletrack and bomb holes. We went straight through a load of Army cadets having a firefight (with blanks) at one point

Thats annoying, I know how p1ssed off I would be if mine got nicked, had one pinched as a kid, what annoys me is the tosser who nick them dont actually ride.
Its no so much the bike itself but all the effort that goes into getting it how you want, I am putting hours into my MTB frame to make it polished raw aluminium but some **** nicks it, the insurance wont pay for that.
I lft mine unlocked in Altrincham and went in a shop, little urban gangsta boy decides to help himself but wasnt quick enough, it was there thirty seconds and this kid changes his demanour, in trying to look nonchalant he looked really like he was up to no good, he couldnt push it and he was too short for it so he got caught and sent on his way, didnt manage to slap him but maybe next time, again, wasnt worth anything but that doesnt stop them.
Would love to plant a nice MTB somewhere and booby trap it.

Yeah, sorry to hear that some tool decided it was better to steal off you rather than earn and buy things himself, makes me
Boobytrapping would be great, wire the frame up to the mains,
Can you imagine the lawsuit afterwards "well I was trying to nick the bike and got a massive shock, your honour"
"no problem, have £5k for the trauma of having your thievery thwarted"

You get a lot of army activity up there - guys on exercises they are not interested in the likes of us and I'm always impressed by the discipline they show in completely blanking you from their mind - as if you're not even there..

Ah, well done - it's good up there. Not least because the area was a popular place for motorcycle scrambles and trials for years so there are many great sections always ready to be exploited.

I can relate, I caught a ****** in the act of stealing mine, luckily he had not quite got through it by the time I got there and scared him off.
I went out and bought the biggest D lock money could buy, I suggest you do the same.
astraboy.
