The dual mass flywheel is there to reduce torsional oscillation of the whole drivetrain, and is specified primarily as a noise, vibration, and harshness countermeasure

Here is a story of a failed one..

Car Mechanics Magazine - Tips from the Trade - A4 Problems

Its basically because people want the refinement of a petrol in a diesel without the vibration of diesel engine.

thanks for the replies seems like a money making thing the tax drivers sometime talk about getting their clutches changed saying i costs alot more than a petrol equivalent due to replacing the flywheel.

You can get a solid flywheel conversions for quite a few cars out there at the moment, the exception being the Vauxhall CDTi

I subscribe to the magazine, but it doesn't get you any additional benefits on the site, they only list a a couple from each issue, there are a few hundred there though, click the different dates.

I'll point out that VW have safety recalls on LUK versions fitted to Golf 5, Tourans etc. They dont shear like on that link though. The absorbtion material between the 2 plates gets too hot, melts and seeps out between the 2 sides. It then gets dragged round and round the bell housing getting even hotter until it catches fire. First you'll notice is when smoke comes billowing out from under the bonnet. Theres been several cases of complete burn out of a car.

They are a ridiculous solution to a problem that wasnt that big an issue in the first place!

Porsche dual mass flywheels were rectified in 1993 when the OEM supplier changed to LUK.
