An ex father in la was the top bloke - voted in for a year etc, lots of getting up & toasting to the queen etc! & an old boys network etc, though plenty of money was given over!

yep the goat thing is true.... didn't one of them get caught last week carrying out his initiation beside a railway line!! Over 100 calls from angry commuters to the police and RSPCA

Emm, dunno about all this "old wifes" tales about what they get up too.
My brothers been made a member of his lodge now, so he's ready to invite newbies in, he's asked me if I would like to join, he assures me no "funny" business goes on, well no chasing goats round or anything. He says they are all a real top bunch of guys though, I think I may give it a try to see what I make of it all.

I've got a book on Freemasonry at home. Apparently a lot of 'churchy' types join. Very scary (not the chruchy types, the things that go on)

Friend of my mums is a member,
a) Yes there is a lot of church related goings on, most of these old "organisations" are religion based. It's not quite the Jesus Army though..
b) They do one hell of a lot of work for the community (in particular old people), all voluntery.
c) They do help each other out business wise, not unlike people help each other out on this BBS.
d) Interferring with goats and getting nipples out? I think not..
I'm not one and don't want to be either (I'm as religious as a paving slab), but most of the stories are just old wives tales.

i think it depends where in the country you are tbh.
Down south here they tend to be a bit more social and community conscious, but when i was growing up in Scotland i remember my father loosing a contract because the guy who had put out to tender felt obliged to give it to a fellow mason (who had zero experience) who then went on to royally screw it up.
A friend of mine's dad was in the chair in the kilwinning lodge (one of the oldest im led to believe) for quite a few years and via them i've had a few run ins with the masons.
Caught a guy stealing crates of beer out the back of a leisure centre at a wedding reception and was ready to 'hold' him till the pigs arrived to be asked to let him carry on as he was in his lodge...(eh!)
Also the aboves chap son who left the army and needed a career went from being a squaddie to a computer programmer to health and safety manager for a national power company then onto an accountant (all in about 5 years) all through fathers position in the lodge.

Just explained a few a of the instances where i've come across them, have also seen plenty of other examples around scottish dock yards where such events as described above where common place, I havent said whether i agree or disagree or anything remotely insulting about them, just my own experiences and dealings......

Sorry but your stories about a guy who got business that your dad didn't get and the Squaddie(some sort of putdown on his intelligence from the context of your statement) getting on and doing well in a firm, then blaming both success and failure on Freemasons(someone call Mulder its a conspiracy). Get real, I've been a Mason for 15 years and its never been positively or negatively taken by anyone(nearest daily similarity is meeting people from the same area whilst abroad or supporting the same football team as you), and if it was either way then they are dicks. I also worked in a shipyard for 6 years and both layers of Managers above me were Roman Catholics(historically anti Fremasonary) and it was no issue for me or them so maybe a long time ago it was possibly an issue(I'm however sceptical) but its certainly not like that today.
In any firm if you hire someone that you know then its on your personal recommendation and therefore your reputation, sure I'll hire the next guy who comes along as he's a Chelsea fan rather than a Spurs one. As if, talk about bl00dy Urban myths.

it was no put down on his intelligence, it was a statement of how he moved through such a diverse collection of careers and WHEN I ASKED how he managed to jump into a health and safety managerial role (as i've known the guy since i was 10) was told they were obtained through his fathers (and his) position in the lodge.
Perhaps your not shaking the right hands
as for shipyards, having seen crane drivers with zero experience employed at Aberdeen purely because they were in the lodge in front of experienced drivers doesn't leave many conclusions to reach.
Sitting in the room waiting to be interviewed and being told by one of the other 5 applicants that we were all wasting our time as he went to the same lodge as the interviewer, then sure enough that guy getting the job would lead many to the same conclusion (even if it may be a wrong one).
edited to say, you may be right about the time period though, this was from late 70's to ...... approx late 80's, should have mentioned that at the tme.

My boss is a Mason and progressed through the ranks to chief Sword Bearer (or some fancy title). From what he told me (which was a fair bit, cos he doesn't believe the Masons should be a secret society and by telling people what goes on he hopes it would dispel the 'urban myths's' as previously described) it's just an expensive drinking club for old blokes with nowt better to do! Yes the initiation ceremonies are centuries old and a bit strange, but who cares? The large amounts given to charity hardly ever get reported as it doesn't fit into the stereotype. He says that he would never give a fellow brother work in preference to a non-brother and even that being a Mason can be a hindrance in business.
For example one of our local authorities has made it a rule that all Masons must declare being such so that contracts are seen to be clear of Mason 'influence'. It works in the reverse as well, Mr A daren't give a job to builder B 'cos he's a Mason, even though he may be better than builder C.
IMHO its no different than being a member of some exclusive golf club!
