Question Riser/recliner chairs for elderly/ill people ?

Well, the old dear was diagnosed with cancer this week and need to sort her with a higher chair which will allow her easy comfort. Went to look at some powered recline/lift ones and the best compromise on price and functionality was a La-Z-Boy at £890 but found the same chair on the web for under £600. Had a look on eBay and there are a few similar 2nd hand ones for reasonable money, and new ones delivered for around £4-500.

So, anyone does with any experience have any recommendations ?

Yeah - get in touch with your local Help The Aged or Age Concern. Familiar territory for them. They may even have some loan equipment.

Hope the old sausage is reasonably comfortable and cheerful. d

No experience, but we could do with a hospital bed for when my Dad comes out of hospital, as he will still be very immobile

Not sure where we could get one from, ideally on loan though

I'm sure you won't but never let a salesman anywhere near your mum as they can really take advantage of a vulnerable person. d

Corradoboy, there is a massive choice of riser/recliner chairs on eBay, brand new or secondhand. The la-Z-boy would be of no real use as your Mother will no doubt require a firmer seating area which only the specific disability chairs offer. If she doesn't need the functionality of a riser/recliner then plenty of mobility shops offer 'chair raisers' that are essentially feet to raise your existing chairs to a more manageable transfer level.

As for the bed, Sonic, your local Social Services should be able to provide your Father with one plus mattress, and a monkey pole if necessary, on loan.

Good luck to you both.

i have a lazyboy recliner, but its the one with the leaver on the side and for an old dear I would of thought it would be pretty hard for them to do.

I bought one of these for grandad (I think its this model) I paid slightly more but dont forget most old people dont have to pay the VAT at 17.5%

0999 - Hampton Leather Electri - Recliner World | Recliner Chairs | Recliners | Leather | Massage | Swivel

it has an electric remote control that recliners the back (up and down) lifts the leg rest up and down and also lifts the chair up off the floor so its very easy to get out of for old bids!

Its leather so if your on a budget the fabric ones will work out cheaper but dont get something less than £500 because they are crap and wont last 5minutes.

I worked out my grandad would sit in it for about 15 hours a day 7 days a week, 52 weeks of the year! Thats a lot of wear for a chair and 2 years old and its still perfect!

I get what you're saying about the high usage and need for reasonable quality. THIS is the front runner at the moment as they don't want leather.

Furniture village for cheaper leather recliners, do get an electric one as the manual ones can be tough for older people. I got a good deal, but had to push hard for a firm delivery date (can be up to 3 months).

As for electric single reclining beds, we sold my dad's on Fleabay for the 100 pounds that we sold it for - we bought it after the last person had used it from new for 3 weeks before going into a home. There was lots of stuff like this for sale 12 months ago.

This can also be a common mistake depending on the users needs so be careful. The person seated in the chair is more important than the condition of the chair after 2 years. Potential bad posture from the 'comfy' chairs does nothing for an old boy/girls hips, breathing, transfers etc.

Though you look like you think the La-z-boy will be best. My advice is you need to try seats really to make sure your Mum can be found above arm level after being seated and that she isn't folded up like a sheet of paper.

A visitor to a patient in my Mums' ward said when his wife died he contacted social services to ask what they wanted to do about the chair they had supplied. They eventually sent someone to collect it and he slashed the fabric before removing it and said he'd be dropping it straight at the tip

Morning Guv',

When you get up.... that's a good price, we paid nearly £1000 for one five years ago, and it was a cheap "copy" with a one switch remote.

We let it go for free to a nearby arthritis sufferer.

I got a S/H Sherborne electric one locally which was as new but cost £860 new. I got it for £200 and it is a real boon if you have trouble with walking etc. I was very lucky to get this one and can recommend them thoroughly if you see one. It is very easy to operate.

Thanls for everyone's input, but situations have changed somewhat and she will have no use for a chair now

Elderly person face problem to sit and get stand up from chair. Chairs for elderly assistance help elderly people to get up without help of other person. It is very comfortable and easy to use. I hope you find this information helpful. Thanks
