Default Inspired by some of you lot I've just bought myself a new MTB

I went out to buy a small light for my kitchen fireplace and came back with this:

It's a Trek 6300 08 (the outgoing model so good discount ) with Rock Shox, Avid Juicies (sp?) hydraulic disc brakes, Deore gears, Bontrager wheels and some girly crud catchers, oh and of course a girly saddle

I really wanted a black bike but this one seemed OK for the price and it was the right size and seemed fairly OK for an entry level jobby so I bought it

I also got some lycra padded shorts (feel like I'm wearing a nappy ), a helmet, some gloves and a water/gin bottle

Then I bought a roof rack cycle carrier thingy because the plan is to chuck the bike on the roof of the car and drive to some nice forest trails. I managed to ride it the 50 yards from the shop to the car without falling off so am now looking for some easy forest trails to start off with. Flat preferably

I quite fancy the idea of renting cottages or log cabins for short breaks during the winter in some nice remote foresty areas with bike trails from the front door then and just spending four days cycling around, building campfires, cooking hot dogs and making coffee out in the middle of nowhere

So any suggestions you have please post them here

Also any recommendations for further clothing and equipment I might need please let me know

Is that the correct saddle height, or are you really that small...??

Good bike though. Well chosen I'd say...

I'm 5' 7" and my feet can just about touch the ground on tip-toe, my leg is pretty much straight when the pedal is fully down although when I'm feeling more comfortable on it I'll raise it a bit. It's a 17" frame.

I don't know if that makes me short or what?

At 5' 7" with that frame size I would say that the seat height is waaay too low... or maybe you have really short legs?

Or maybe it's a deceptive griant sized MTB??

It was alright in the shop (the nice man said so ), it may have dropped when I stuffed it into the back of the car for the journey home

Not rocket science.... a rough guide is that the saddle should be about the same height as the handlebar - usually a bit higher

Secret is to use it and not make excuses, I work with a lad who loves bikes but just cant get his head round the actual cycling part.

Get a lock, decent lights, HELMET, some reflective stuff, good waterproof coat and pants. I am buying loads of stuff at the moment, just got an Altura NightVision coat, Aldi do cycling stuff, I got some SPD shoes, 20 quid, not quite top end but will do for now, I need a decent front light and some panniers now.

I use mine all the time to commute now but also to nip into town, for example, I went to post a parcel, there and back quicker than in the car, didnt have to locate, pay for and walk from a parking space, stuck the parcel in a backpack and then watched all the pillocks battling for a Saturday morning space.

I can just see Sal commuting on it...walks downstairs into the kitchen / office, outside to the shed, sits on bike, gets off bike, walks back into office / kitchen, makes coffee, sits at desk, logs onto Scoobynet, cycle to work, DONE!

Part of Sal's master plan is that I also go along for the ride so in the morning I'll be mostly dusting off my bike, taking the slicks off and refitting the knobblys as Sal is too girly to go on roads! Then I'll be fitting the roofrack which looks scary!

Well I still haven't taken it out for a ride yet Last night we went out for dinner, ate a ridiculous amount of food and drank far too much because I can now I have a MTB and owning one of these will make me fit

There will be no pics of me in my cycling shorts so you can all breathe a sigh of relief And I can guarantee that the idea of a 30 mile cross country trek hasn't even entered my mind yet

I will, however, be up in Cropton Forest on the North York Moors this coming weekend and there are lots and lots of bike trails in the area. Unfortunately someone has decided to put a car rally on right in the middle of it so I won't be cycling anywhere

Are you bringing the bike though?

You can entertain us between cars - bunny hops, wheelies and the like

Well done for taking the plunge! MTBs are good fun and I'm sure yours will soon have all the kit! Remember, kit=weight, weight=bad, so keep it to a minimum!

My road bike had some use this weekend. A 40 mile round trip to Silverstone to watch the start of the Britcar 24hr race. Was smashing! Very tired when we got home, but we'd managed to fit in a meal at a pub which was nice.

Cycling is great

And my cycling shorts feel like a nappy too, but after 40 miles, I'm actually quite glad!

I have a fair bit of my own padding for which I will be grateful I'm sure although the idea of the bike is to try and reduce that

A 40 mile round trip is some good going I'm itching to get out on mine especially in this lovely autumnal weather. It's my favourite time of year to be out in the forests.

I should dust my MTB off and have a go round Harlestone Firs.... Avoiding the homeless camps and illegal MX bikes of course!

That goes eventually, no amount of padding really avoids it, I think it just defers the agony.
