Car seat disposal after accident
Hello
I was unfortunate enough to be involved in a head on car crash on Sunday. My wife and son were in the car with me and we all have bruises and whiplash/seatbelt/airbag injuries, but the most important thing is that my son was unharmed in the back of the car in his car seat.
I have ordered a new seat yesterday but need to dispose of the seat involved in the accident. I spoke to Maxi Cosi and Mothercare and they both said just bung it in a skip and it will go to landfill (cut straps so it cant be used). I really think there should be a way of either recycling it or doing something better than putting it in landfill where it will probably take thousands of years to decompose.
Anyone know of any better ways of disposing of these seats ? In case anyones interested its a Maxi Cosi Priorifix ISOFIX seat and as far as I am concerned could well have saved my sons life so I cant recommend it enough.

The above is what I did when my son grew into a larger seat. Cut the straps and the tip for the rest. Life's too short for worrying about it too much.
Though I did collect batteries for ages until I fund a local tip that could recycle them - 'cos they are toxic in landfill!

Some councils will take bulky plastic toys and try to recycle them, perhaps the plastic in the seat is ok for this. Also there are clothes banks for recycling, perhaps the fabric can be put in there. Metal buckles in the metal bins I suppose. Straps - dunno. Probably just leaves you with the remains of the sweets and biscuits to dispose of (if my kids were anything to go by) :-)

I did a hunt and have confirmed that they are not recyclable as a complete unit, i.e. they DO go to landfill...
however there are some daft ideas here: How can I reuse or recycle a damaged children’s car seat? How can I recycle this?

5t - thats what I thought, i called them to ask if they wanted it back and they said no.
Sal - was driving down a single carriageway road at about 35mph. Car coming the other way is stopped waiting to turn across (i would assume) behind me, except the old biddy waited until I was about 10 meters away and then turned in front of me. No time to hit brakes or avoid her. Thank god the Toyota is full of safety bits and airbags, and that Toms car seat did its job.
Assessors are looking at car today but insurance have already said that it is most defintely a write off. Its only 6 months old......didnt like it anyway

As MF & MC said, cut strap & landfill
from a seatblet point of view, the webbing will have streched, reducing ts ability to absorb chock loading, the seat (prolly polyfoam etc) will be distorted too (although not to the naked eye)
we only ever used belts & restaints for any live testing once only.
