Default Drink Drive Limits

Average male can neck 3 Whiskeys, Vodkas or similar and still be under the limit?

Most people I know would be a touch wobbly.

That's a very rough rule of thumb, it depends on when and what you've eaten, hydration levels, metabolism, pot luck. If in doubt, don't do it. I go on the 1 unit per hour guide, as the average person can metabolise 1 unit per hour. So after a pint of Stella, one hour means you still have 2 units in your system, so another pint and you're stuffed.

I agree. But the limit seems on the high side. Someone could probably be irresponsible and neck 4 shots then drive - assuming they just neck it and get in the car and drive they would legally still get away with it (a unit will probably drop off by the time they are processed and blood tested)?

I agree, I think most of the rest of Europe is only 50mg/ml not 80, and some Scandanavian countries are even lower. I restrict myself to a pint with meal, or a couple of normal glasses of wine if I'm in a restaurant for a couple of hours, but these days I'm inclined not to drink at all. One reason why I've spent years and loads of £££ trying to get the missus driving, so I can get pissed on a night out for a change!

UK law's are lower than you think...

In the UK the drink driving limit is:

35 micrograms of alcohol in 100 millilitres of breath; or
80 milligrams of alcohol per 100 millilitres of blood; or
107 milligrams of alcohol per 100 millilitres of urine.
Source

The main test is breath, so don't let the 80 milligrams confuse you.

From *ahem* frontline experience 2 pints of normal lager for a bloke of 'average' size will have you just under the limit.

I've seen a man who blew 4 times over the limit who admitted that he'd had 14 pints of Stella and a bottle and a half of wine over a quick evening on it, so the scale isn't sliding.

I was quoting the blood test levels, simply forgot the 100 in front of ml.

Are you sure that you aren't confused?

Breath is MICRO-grams (µg)
Blood in milli-grams (mg)

That's only a slight difference. Not being a gambling man myself, so I wont test you on that.

But what about this:

You get pulled for driving just outside the Met Police area, when 1 metre away you're in (Surrey, Hert, Esses, etc.................. You blow red on the street breath machine and are nicked, then taken back to a Surrey station where you blow 39. You're charged with DD and lose your licence, get a crim record and have the pain of future insurance costs.

However............

You manage to drive a metre on and get pulled in a Met Police area and fail the same breath test. Get nicked, and because of the rules are taken to a Met Police Station where you blow the same 39 and are released without charge.

MASSIVE difference.

That's the way it is in England. The Met only charge above 39, even though 35 is the legal limit.

My point was : No-one (other than the police), know exactly what your allowed to do these days. I hear different story's from people all the time. At the end of the day, if your obviously pissed, your gonna get nicked.

It's just working out what the copper determines as 'pissed' before he/she decides to pull/test you.

Not worth the chance really.

Simple driving errors, smell and glazed eyes are key. There's also the special test of driving really close and seeing if the driver's window suddenly goes down too.

And the cig try, along with straight into the petrol station try too. And, of course, the pull in to use the phone try - always a good one.

So, to clarify - Pulling into the petrol station whilst pissed with the window's down, having a ciggy is not a good thing. Especially if you look like a wreck when you get out of the car and stink like a brewery.

I have never had the breath test .. I have been asked if I've been drinking a few times but never been tested... once a cop asked me to breath on him... I laughed, he laughed and off I went .. very weird.

Although to be honest I have never driven drunk .. as I know the one time I do.. I'll either get or caught or worse, kill someone.

The most positive answer is not to allow drivers to drink at all. Can't be any doubt then.

Best advice out and dont drink near me and try to drive I WONT think twice about ringing the police its been the 1 thing ive always hated, drink drivers,
the worst thing was years ago it wasn`t even frowned upon.

Brett
ps can you tell I nearly lost someone to a drink driver who was only just over the limit in a 18wheeler and he crushed the car to half its size and he was only JUST over 35 mg in his breath test but failed the blood test by miles.

i'll have a pint and drive from a scooby meet.....

i make it last a while and then have a coke if still thirsty.

i like a pint and i also realise that even this WILL impair my driving and
take appropriate measures (ie: not loon about on the way home)

no more though !!

Yes, although you have to have some level of tolerance as if you went to the pub at lunchtime, had two pints and then drove home at 4pm (good job ) then you would probably have SOME alcohol in your system still.

Sprits and drink drive limits are somewhat vaigue, due to the various strengths of certain spirits we can have in shot measures.

For example Baileys, often sold in in spirit sized shots yets is about 14% ABV yet on the other end were have the srtong Whiskies and Vodkas of 40% upwards (not to forget Stroh "80" not that you can get that from a pub, more likely to be found in B & Q in the paint stripper section).

Limits are a pain. I'd like to see them stricter as to remove doubt, but then a quickie at lunch or a late night bender on the weekend would make it even more doubtful if I were over the limit a good number of hours later. And really, its not the ones who have one or two pints that are the problem, its the ones who blatantly defy the law and our lives by just not being able to say no to another pint or use their brain and leave their car behind.

Its nice to have a beer instead of a sickly sweet sugar/aspartame fest that most soft drinks are, yuk.

Its not the people who hover around the limit that are the real dangers, but those who drink to excess, completely ignore the law and common sense then have devastating accidents, sadly they usually take others with them. So for these idiots lowering the limit will have no effect what so ever.

It's VERY difficult to work out accurately how much you can have and stay within the limit. Research also indicates that some people's driving is impaired at levels below the UK limit.

If you're drinking, leave the car at home. Best rule of thumb going!

If you had an accident having been drinking, even if you were under the limit, you'd never forgive yourself.
