Japanese are always interesting with their traditions.
It is changing, but it still goes on (at least so I am told).

Think it's still practised in some rural areas of China, but is thankfully rare. There are various examples of extreme body "modification", foot binding, neck rings in Africa, skull shaping (South America?), female circumcision. Some for cultural aesthetics, others for religious beliefs.
