There is instamapper.com that uses 3G, your phone then sends a signal (user definable) every 5 seconds which is trackable via any PC connected to the internet.

So your phone becomes a tracking device, did I say it's also free?

I wired one into my Scooby to use as a £10 tracker - could log on and check it was still where I left it.
The person who's phone you're tracking needs to give you permission

Not if it's your phone though.

Theres 2 different types of phone tracking

1) Where your phone has a GPS device attached to it - accurate to about 5m

2) Where the phone mast to which your phone is currently connected is reported - accurate to about 2 miles (depending on whether inside or outside of built up areas)

Just be aware of the differences in accuracy & don't expect to track your girlfriend/boyfriend's movements using their phone to any degree of precision.

Can you not just ring them up and ask them where they are?

I suggest you look at instamapper.com its accurate to 5 mtrs via the iphone, crackbury etc. and even shows live and recorded overlay maps in googlemaps. It has to be your phone though as apple has restricted the application so that it can't run in the background.

I think you will find that my item 1) covers it - inbuilt or attached GPS device required

InstaMapper - Free Real-Time GPS Tracking

Then you will get the accuracy. However, if no GPS receiver, then no accurate tracking as despite all the hype, there is currently no triangulated cell tower pinpointing offered. Cell tracking only shows what cell your phone is currently working through and that has big limitations. More accurate in town (150m radius) but outside can be several mile radius, which is like looking for a needle in a haystack.

No apology needed.
