Either the BBC is incorrect, or Ive been mistaken for years. I always thought that the family name was Farina with Pinin being his father's nick name?

Both. Born Sergio Farina, In 1961 his family surname was changed from Farina to Pininfarina, to match that of the company, by decree of the Italian president.
