Anyone had root canal work?
Went to the dentist yesterday and looks like I need the above, anyone got any advice/experiences they would like to share?
Also how much did it cost?
Cheers,
Paul.

Had a 'freak' tooth that needed 32 treatments, had a lateral canal and the nerves just wouldn't die
Sorest thing I've ever had done (and that includes removal of my 4 wisdom teeth the year after, incl breaking the jaw to get them out)
However, on another tooth that I had treated it was only a couple of appointments and no real significant pain
Was on Denplan so can't tell you about cost
Enjoy

I had root canal work done and to be honest didn't feel a thing! I asked for maximum anaesthetic and wouldn't let the dentist touch it until the full effect had taken place I can't remember how much it cost as I had a crown done at the same time but it was certainly a few hundred quid

I've had several (another next week) and the cost as been between 150 and 185 at a variety of dentists. Not painful at all if you have a considerate dentist but it's the thought and the noises that unsettle me every time.
High speed drills I can just about deal with but when the dentists says "this is a bigger, slower drill and it will feel different" he's right. The low speed I could actually feel grinding the teeth away and it vibrated my whole skull. Not painfull but disturbing.
I had one in one of my front teeth and that was interesting but it wasn't done properly and some decay was left behind and has spread, tooth is now very discoloured and needs something else done when I get round to it.
Basically don't worry about it, it won't be as bad as you imagine.

I need it done also but as it's a tooth right at the back, I'm just gonna have it removed. I was quoted in excess of a grand, hence the decision to have it taken out (£1000 vs £65 - no comment required).

Last root canal I had (treatment finished 2 weeks ago) the amount of anaesthetic I had for that one tooth would have knocked over a horse and it still wasn't enough. Ended up drilling a bit, injecting more anaesthetic inside the tooth and repeat until done.
All good now, though
The whole treatment cost AUD5000 give or take and for that I had 2 root canals and 2 crowns

Hope you have a high pain threshold. Worst thing I've ever had done at the dentist, was sore for weeks after.

It's the single most painful experience I've ever had. I have a fairly high pain threshold, remained in control when I broke my leg for example and just took it. However the pain from having someone stick a metal probe into my broken, infected nerve endings was beyond belief. A kind of suffusing white hot pain that created it's own reality.
Cost me £500 to have it sorted and I was a hairsbreadth away from snotting the dentist when he came at me the final time. Took 4 sessions including initial consultation, each one worse than the last.
I'd only wish it on someone I didn't like much which I suppose leaves quite a number of people I'm hoping have to have the procedure.

If you like dentures then the cheap route is the way to go.

Oh my god
Long story.
Hadn't been to the dentist for years, went and registered to new dentist with wife under recommendation from her sister.
Anyway, off I go and she cleans them all up.
2 maybe 3 weeks later on a Sunday evening all of a sudden I'm in complete agony, ring dentist and get sent to casualty.
He says I have an abscess and then injected my gum 4 times, and comes back a bit later and I explain that its still sore.
He says only option to ease pain is to drill tooth etc and explained the root canal procedure to me.
He drilled, was so feckin sore, but then eased quite quickly.
He squirted aesthetic in and then said he was going to kill the nerve etc.
filled drilled hole and told me to go home and have a drink.
You'd have though i'd just had a shower - was soaking with sweat and shaking.
Then i had to go to dentist again as hospital job was only temporary.
She done drilling and poking those horrible rods up your gum - which feel like they're gonna come out you eye bye the way. Don't like that one bit.
Sometime again the whole thing started off again, but i remembered the build up symptoms this time and got her to fix it again before it got real bad.
Had to have it done one more time after that.
That time I refused to go through it and told her I wanted to be knocked out instead.
Didn't feel a thing that time - throughly recommend a wee sleep, actually quite enjoyable in fact
Apart from my first episode, its not really sore, more very uncomfortable.
Imagine this, the dentist started to drill (my visit after hospital) and you're not given an injection.
Push her away, explain immediate requirement for injection, she explains that no need as there is no nerve.
Protest to dentist - But how do you know - did you take it out?
She then carries on drilling and you can't help but think this is gonna be sore and grip the sides of the chair - but it wasn't
I'm with denplan too, but had to pay £45 quid for the sleeping element.
My recommendation - go for a wee sleep.

On the NHS, you are looking at £45.
However, unless you are a regular attender, you might not find a dentist willing to take you on as a new patient.
He/she will be losing money at that rate, and you haven't built up any good will with them.
You can always try to find someone through your local PCT.
As regards pain, as long as you have an aneasthetic and it is working, you will not feel anything - it ain't rocket science.
Going private is always an option.
Whichever way you go, there is no definite guarantee of success.
Hope this helps.

Unfortunately, a year or so later I had to have the crowns removed anyway as they came loose. Cost me £20 each to have the roots removed (Cue crunching noise as you can imagine. . . ) adding insult to (wallet) injury!
In the end, I shoul've had em removed first time, would have been less pain and less money! I've never had further issues, and thats 6 years ago. . .

I had a dentist break a file inside my tooth whilst performing a root canal, he didn't tell me at the time and I ended up paying a fortune to have it removed years later. The tooth is still a problem and will probably have to be pulled soon.

I've had it done before and swore that if I ever needed it done again I'd just have the bugger taken out and be done with it.
Had nowt but trouble with it since, so much of the tooth is now filling that the bits round the outside that are left keep breaking off a little at a time and trap food like nobody's business.

Had it done not so long back, it took 3 sittings at the dentist, 2 Hrs each time. He could only find 2 of the 3 nerves thats why it took so long. I must admit i really wasnt looking forward to the pain ! but in all honesty it was fine ! even the days after were pain free...
One really good bit of advice to make the time go quicker is take your ipod in ! the dentist suggested i bring one, i got told to sit still loads of times as i found myself dancing away in the chair..lol
Good luck anyway mate, im sure you'll be fine. End of the day like you said..you need it done so, suck it in, be a man and crack on ! lol

Had it done twice now, both on denplan too,
Dentist said he wished all his patients were as easy to work on as me.
Not as bad as you think it might be.
I almost fell a sleep both times.
No f*£ing sticker at the end of it though
Although the assisstant was mighty fine indeed

Had one filled years ago, seem to recall thinking myself a complete p*ssy for making them stop halfway through for more anaesthetic but it seems that i am not alone.
In general have it filled and keep your own teeth if you can.......don't they always say: chicks love scars and......dentures!
