Default Breakdown cover

Currently have AA and have been with them for years but the renewal is £214 for the top package for myself and the wife, usually if I ring them I can get it down a bit but I think its time for a change.

Any recommendations ?

Although I can get discounted rates through the NHS for AA and RAC I found Subaru Assistance to be a fair bit cheaper - and it included Europe cover. My renewal's due next month but I've not had notice of the amount due yet - their number is 020 8666 9229 - let us know how you get on. I had to call them out about a year ago for what in the end turned out to be a battery issue - he wasn't from a scooby dealer but an appointed mechanic, he was there within the hour and tested various bits and pieces rather than simply jumping the car which is probably as much as, if not more than, I'd have expected of the major companies.

I'm with Subaru Assistance. I've just renewed for £74.50, for this country only.

I'm with Autoaid, did get the idea off moneysaving expert.

It costs about £35 per year and is full cover. Doesn't work quite like AA etc. If my car breaks down I call them, they send recovery or whatever i need and will take me and the car anywhere i need to go. I pay the recovery and then claim the cost back from autoaid. Its more of a breakdown insurance i think.

I did it because i wanted the same of peace of mind as with the top RAC or AA type cover but didn't want the cost.

We pay an extra £15 (I think, give or take £1) on our bank account each month to have a premium account which provides 'free' AA membership plus travel insurance and a few other benefits, in our case it is definitely worth it. I have only had to call the AA once, they sent a guy from a local garage and I was happy with the service but equally have been with my dad twice now recently when he has needed the RAC out and they have been excellent. The RAC had a stand in Tesco and the sales guy was giving us all the sales patter, amazing how much the price he quoted dropped when I mentioned I could get my dad something a lot cheaper over the internet.

I've been with AA a long time - since the days of the salute - but I don't pay anything like that

Got most things like Home Start but not sure about Europe. Added my son for an extra £25 and he is covered for any old wreck he has.

Britannia Rescue is my preferred choice.

I find the AA very useful as long as it has nothing to do with motoring dl

ADAC for full service: cheap, suberb and brilliant for Europe (and even the Nordschleife): Autoaid for a cheap UK alternative.

Cheers for the replies.

Ended up staying with AA after some negotiation, partially as they dropped it 50 quid and partially as I don't want to go through the conversation with the wife that involves her getting stranded and me being tight means she has to wait or doesnt get recovered at all, the conversation that ends with "We'll see won't we" with the implication that I am mean, gullible and clueless.

I get AA cover with my bank account. Only had to use them once when I blew my gearbox up last year.

Told them on the phone to send a flat bed truck...... Sent a bloke in his little van to try and fix it. The bloke then had to ring and tell them to send a flat-bed truck. Then he said that since he couldn't fix it he would then get fined/docked or something like that.
