Do be careful in colombo, the tigers are still attacking the capital on a regular basis.
If you have the time the cricket ground in galle is amazing, infact one of my favourite places in the world for sport. Only problem this is south of the island and probably to far to travel to.
Enjoy, I think Sri Lanka is a great country and unfortunately tainted by the temil tigers.

Yeah about 10 years ago, one of the best places i've been to, lovely people and some great places to visit, great food.
Must see's
Sigiriya - awesome
Polonnaruwa for the Buddha's and the caves (watch out for the monkeys)
Galle for the Fort and the fishermen
Peradeniya for the Botanic Gardens
Dambulla for the Golden Temple
Pinnawela elephant orphanage
Kandy for Buddha and his tooth, you'll have top wear a wrap to get in there no shorts or trousers allowed
Colombo has a good market
the local dancers and drummers are also very good, the drumming is very impressive.
Just avoid the North East - Tamil country
There is so much to see and do in Sri Lanka if you like getting out and about and seeing the country/people/culture etc. Plenty of mini van tours when we were there, we must have covered most o0f the country, the highlight for me was climbing the rock at Sigiriya (you can see it in the Duran Duran video for Save a Prayer, the rock rises out of the jungle and you get to climb to the top.
I'd love to go back there a fantastic country, I've probably forgotten half the things we did, we did so much.
Enjoy

The Tigers trying to blow up the airport did give us some problems getting out.
Very hot and humid, food poisoning was horrendous (despite 5 star hotels).
The historic sites were excellent, the high altitude tea areas provided a welcome relief from the heat. It took a very long time to travel short distances due to the roads. People were lovely.
You must get out of Colombo.

15 years ago on honeymoon, agree with what's been said. Lovely people, but your brave if you take on the Colombo traffic!
We went there a few weeks after a suicide bomber had blown up the President, there was a lot of security, felt safe, but when we were in Kandy the Tigers blew up part of the power infrastructure so no power for about 3 hours.
Recommend it, especially Sigiriya, the climb to the top was "interesting" especially when your scared of heights like me.
