Yes, coupling rods.
They were there, since on steam engines, power from the pistons was delivered to only one wheel on either side, (and sometimes some cylinders inbetween the frames), via the connecting rod.
The wheels were coupled so that all 4, 6, 8 or 10 turned at once, increasing tractive effort.
With the advent of electric power, and diesels with electric traction motors on each axle, the need for coupling rods has all but disappeared, although shunters do still tend to have them, having only one traction motor.

Oh yes you want to see me when I buff my car, best togs and all. I have a knackered old mulberry t-shirt that has been used as a painting top, wash rag and floor wipe and has holes in it. Teemed up with some knackered combat shorts that gape open at odd moments to give the neighbours a full view
You would be proud of me you closet plane/train geek spotter

Although some of them are more hi-tech nerds these days with voice recorders and decent digicams to capture their favourite rusting hulks of 1960's deisel technology
Sad, but at least it beats stabbing people for fun

When was the last time you saw a trainspotter in anything as flash as that

They hurt no-one, bother no-one and cause very little disturbance, if any, and zero aggro. They are spending THEIR money how THEY wish.
Why are they any sadder than, say, whacking a little white ball into a hole you can't even see? Or standing in the freezing cold watching someone else try and get a car around a forest track?
Many of them actually travel by train, which all adds to the TOC's profits.
As stated, I just can't understand this media-led need to label people as sad, nerd etc because of their hobby

In all honesty, I see nothing sad about it whatsoever.

I know plenty of them, in my line of work, and yes most of them are very sad. But some of them are actually bright inteligent people.
Each to there own I say, as you say theyy're not harming anyone
Nowhere near as sad and pathetic as watching Cricket or fishing or playing golf
I take loads of pics of trains, from a professional viewpoint. I took some today of the 'Long Welded Rail' train doing it's job. After nearly 30 years on the railway, you still learn something new every day

My step-father was a train spotter, taking snaps of engines etc. He's made a bit of money out of it selling pictures on eBay etc, things like pictures of the drivers of locos/busses requested by their, now adult, children. These are all real negatives, no disposeable digital type shots, moments in time preserved.
Although not a train spotter, I have always enjoyed making models and watching at stations etc. I have an N gauge coffee table layout at home, nothing fancy, but looks good.

Make sure you don't buy a pup Those locos have had such a long and chequered life that it's hard to tell which is still a good one.
Still one of my favourites as they have served me well throughout my career
