Default is there a law on car club convoys?

as thread.

is there a law on cars in convoys etc?

Am I right in thinking more than 5 from a car club constitutes a convoy?

how would they identify it? I mean, would the police end up pulling over all the motorway mondeos and 3 series lol often see many of them nose to tail.

If you are in something gay, like a Smart car, then expect to be pulled over and given the rubber-glove treatment.

I believe Police will use the laws which are supposed to stop groups gathering and disperse them, but I'm not sure if it applies to vehicles (as you are moving). My mate is a cop (in Derbyshire), I can ask her if you want me to, Phil.

well that's it isn't it, lol

serious note though, I thought that they clamp down on convoys under the 'cruise' label, as it causes frustration with other road uses and those road uses try and get by the line of cars.
I think a funeral presession might be in another group though from 'cruises'

If you are making progress you should be o.k.....

However, cause a "pensioner out on Sunday" type queue and they will be far more interested...

IMHO

DunxC

P.S. All the convoy's I've been in were to cool2 2stop ! LOL

I go out on big club motor bike convoys and it has never been a problem. They all come out to wave at us on our good old bikes!

I have arranged a few. In general you wont need a permit, but if you are the event organiser I strongly advise you call and speak to the MSA about a permit, then when they say you dont need just ask for it on an e-mail and they will send it over, keep that with you just in case.

In general the rules go, if there is no set route that cars MUST stick too, no set start times, no timing, no prizes or rewards then in general you are ok.

If you are doing any of the above then you need a permit.

The last one I did was 15 cars and we just put a disclaimer in the route book saying that the route is for info only and they can go any way they want and that there was no reward or prizes, no timing allowed etc etc etc. The MSA were happy with that and we did the event no problem.

Be aware, if you do need a permit its a royal PITA to sort out as it involves a lot of admin

Phil, the MSA is the Motor Sports Association who govern motorsports in the UK.

Generally, I think the rules are that 6 or more cars following a fixed route is considered a 'rally'. Up to 12 cars, limited PR is required, but over that and, in theory, anyone on the proposed route should be contacted and advised of the event.

In reality, I guess if you're not racing in any way, keep to small sub-groups and don't interfere with the general flow of traffic, then you'll be ok.

I thought they had changed the law in certain areas of Nottingham, due to the amount of 'cruisers' out causing trouble and racing etc

That's regarding stationary vehicles and ones racing on the highway.

I led a convoy of 120+ to a country lane about 2 miles from the NBO in 2006!
We eventually all made it to the hallowed field
In all the time I've done drives out, we've never been stopped once for being in a convoy. I have the impression more than 5 is a convoy, but how that stacks up legally I don't know.

over here we have a thing called the "northern ireland parade's commision" (it's meant to be because of the band parade's (12th july etc) ), we have to submit forms to them before any runs for ScoobyIreland.com - for Irish Subaru owners and enthusiasts! just to keep ourselves right

In UK it's Motor Vehicles (Competition and Trials) Regs 1969. Under this anyone organising an event on the road needs to be authorised.

But there are blanket exepmtions, one of which is events with less than 12 cars as mentioned above. Another is "events in which no merit is attached to completing the event with the lowest mileage and in which, as respects such parts of the event as is held on a public highway, there are no performance tests and no route and competitors are not timed or required to visit the same places, except that they may be required to finish at the same place by a specified time".

Clearly a convoy run isn't timed and doesn't have performance tests. Where you'll potentially fall foul is the route bit. Most convoys have no instructions so nobody could say they're required to follow the same route. But if you do have words then put something in about no fixed route and I would think you're laughing.
